Sony Electronics has expanded its line of Memory Stick storage media, including adding a 2GB Memory Stick Pro card that will ship later this year.

Memory Stick flash media is compatible with the company's digital cameras and other mobile devices.

The new 2GB Memory Stick Pro card will ship in November, and is expected to sell for about $700, according to the company. At about the same time Sony ships the higher capacity Memory Stick, it expects to ship a 1GB, $350 Memory Stick Pro Duo card as well. This card is about half the size of a standard Memory Stick Pro, and may be used with an adapter in devices that support the standard-sized Memory Stick Pro.

Sony also plans to revamp its entire line of Memory Stick Pro and Pro Duo media this fall, by boosting read/write speeds above current levels, to up to 10MB per second. The new cards will be identifiable by their red color and the addition of the words "High Speed." The 256MB ($100), 512MB ($170) and 1GB ($350) Memory Stick Pro media, as well as the 256MB ($105) and 512MB ($175) Memory Stick Pro Duo, are scheduled to become available in High Speed in October.

Concurrent with the introduction of new media, Sony will also recast its original line of Memory Stick Pro and Pro Duo media, shipping the media in sleek black casing, and dropping the prices. A 256MB Memory Stick Pro card will cost $80, a 512MB card will cost just under double that amount ($150). The more compact Memory Stick Pro Duo media will cost a little more: $85 for the 256MB version, and $155 for the version.

The company has also introduced a three-in-one USB 2.0 reader/writer, MSAC-USM1, that accepts Memory Stick, Duo, Pro and Pro Duo media (without requiring an adapter), as well as MicroDrive and Type I and II CompactFlash cards. Pricing is about $30, according to the company.
