South Korea's G.Mate has confirmed it plans to begin shipping the Yopy, a Linux-based personal digital assistant, in late December.
At the same time, the company also began accepting orders for the device through its Web site, quoting a December 21 shipping date and a price of $399.
The Yopy was first shown in public more than a year and a half ago, at the Cebit 2000 trade show in Hannover, Germany, and its shipping date has slipped several times since then.
Its most recent appearance at the Comdex Fall 2001 trade show in Las Vegas in November revealed a drastic redesign to the Yopy. The PDA is now based on a clamshell design, similar to many cellular telephone handsets, rather than the more traditional PDA form factor.
Based around a StrongArm processor from Intel, the Yopy runs the ARM Linux operating system and X Windows. It has a 3.5-inch reflective liquid crystal display with 240-by-320 pixel resolution, 64MB of memory, a 40-key keypad, infrared, and RS-232C ports.
It measures 4.0 by 2.7 by 0.6 inches and weighs 5 ounces. Battery life is longer than 12 hours.
