Lexmark PrinTrio X75

This bargain all-in-one is adequate for basic printing, scanning, and copying, but a little more money gets you a lot more MFP.

WHAT'S HOT: At a price of $100, Lexmark's PrinTrio X75 is designed to appeal to people on shoestring budgets. And though it was far from the fastest printer of the seven MFPs we tested, it managed the third-best score in our scan speed tests, beating out more-expensive entries from HP and Canon. On top of that, unlike some faster units, it produced respectable-looking color scans, again finishing among the top three in that category.

Like the Lexmark X5150 and the Dell A940, the X75 includes Abbyy's top-notch FineReader OCR software on its driver. The OCR function delivered scanned text to a range of programs, including Microsoft Word.

WHAT'S NOT: The PrinTrio X75 racked up some of the lowest scores in our print and copy quality assessments, coming in last or next-to-last in most cases. It was slow, too, requiring 127 seconds to print a color photo at normal settings. A one-color, one-page copy took 40 seconds to produce.

WHAT ELSE: When you're printing, a small window appears to indicate not only the progress of the document, but also the amount of ink remaining in your cartridges. This gives you a better feel for how much ink you use regularly.

The PrinTrio X75 also includes BVRP Software's FaxTools application, which enables you to use the MFP as a fax machine with the help of your PC. You can scan an outgoing fax document from the main Lexmark MFP software, which then launches the Scan-to-Fax app. BVRP's clean software interface acts as a fax center for managing incoming and outgoing fax tasks. The X75 capably sends out multipage faxes, but the software designers buried this basic function under a couple of layers of advanced settings in the main MFP software.

UPSHOT: Though its price is undeniably attractive, the PrinTrio X75 requires trade-offs, such as slow, subpar prints and copies.
