Many system-speed demons take to the web in search of free tools to tweak their PC. Try it yourself, and all you find are utilities make grand claims of improved performance, faster boot times, and enhanced privacy. Plenty of those utilities look like scams. To save you the trouble of finding the best cleanup utility yourself, we rounded up five free PC cleanup utilities. CCleaner helps clear the junk from your hard drive or SSD. It does as much as many paid programs do, but does it for free.

The largest and most complicated of these utilities, it doesn't claim to work on Windows 8.
This program didn't work on our Windows 8 test system, but since the vendor doesn't support it on Windows 8, that's no big surprise.
The free version of PC Booster is just a teaser for the full version. Not only is it very limited, it pops up frequent nags.
