Pros
  • Excellent range
  • Extremely fast file transfers from USB 3.0 storage devices
  • Compelling feature set, including downstream QoS
  • A very fast 802.11ac router
  • DLNA media server
  • Very good NAS performance (for a router)
  • Costs half as much as an 802.11ac wireless bridge
  • Mobile—draws power from the host's USB port
  • Fast enough to stream HD video
Cons
  • Requires second Nighthawk configured as 802.11ac bridge for top performance
  • Exceedingly large wall wart
  • Bulky industrial design
  • No VPN pass-through
  • Lacks an iTunes server
  • Works with only one PC
  • Much more expensive than an 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter
At A Glance

Netgear's Nighthawk 802.11ac router boasts a strong feature set, delivers exceptional range, and is reasonably priced. It's the best Wi-Fi router on the market, at least for now.

Netgear's R6300 is an exceptionally good router, but it's not better than the Asus RT-AC66U.

If you need to connect just a single client, such as a laptop or a home-theater PC, to your 802.11ac network, Netgear's A6200 is a far cheaper alternative to a wireless bridge.
