Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station With Gigabit Ethernet Review

- Apple has always "thought different" in its approach to Wi-Fi router design. The latest incarnation of the AirPort Extreme (earlier 802.11g and nongigabit 802.11n versions have similar names, so be careful when shopping) has dual-band support, but can run only in one band at a time: You must choose either 2.4-GHz or 5-GHz mode.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Good signal, which is the reason I purchased it. My husband can now get a good signal anywhere in the house (which has plaster walls) with his laptop. Couldn't before.

Weaknesses: None really -- see comment below.

Overall Evaluation: The only slight negative (not really a negative) is that the Air Port Extreme takes a few seconds to connect. My computer (an iMac) scans for a few seconds before it connects. So if I unsleep my computer I find I need to wait several seconds before hitting "Get Mail." If I don't wait, it says "can't find server" or something similar. This was not the case with my former router.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Best looking network equipment; strong, stable, reliable wireless signal; combines wireless and wired network routing; enables network access of printer and hard drive through USB; PC compatible

Weaknesses: Can not access A band and B/G bands simultaneously

Overall Evaluation: Only Apple seems to understand that consumer technology products can be both functional AND beautifully designed. I'm not quite sure why this is... Nevertheless, you can expect both great performance and elegant design to come with your Airport Extreme wireless router.
