User Reviews for Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504

    Duration of ownership:

    Strengths: Design, features

    Weaknesses: Performance, reliability

Overall Evaluation: Mine has been into service three times, first for random shutdowns, now for slow performance from bios fix that was supposed to fix shutdowns. Latest bios (1.7) works great if all you want is a 750Mhz computer (throttles back CPU when it gets hot), unfortunately I paid for a 1.1 Ghz!

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Terrific graphics and sound. Handles nicely with comfortable, resilient keyboard. 512 RAM and 30 gig hd gives enough machine to do most any job.

Weaknesses: Lack of ports other than USB is a bit of a pain.

Overall Evaluation: This is my 4th laptop and the best by far. I was not shopping Toshiba when I got this one, but am extremely pleased with it. I think it leads the laptop line with its 'over the top' sharp appearance, extensive memory and great graphics and sound. It replaces a desktop for me. And the SmartMedia slot is irreplacible for anyone doing much photography. My review is only showing up as 3 1/2 stars for some reason, but this is a 5 star machine in my book!

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: It has a large 15 LCD screen, has usb ports. The sound is very clear. The graphics are very good

Weaknesses: Heavy, the battery does not last very long. It does not have a parelle port for printing, but you can still use the usb ports for that.

Overall Evaluation: It is very good for watching DVDs. It was a nice size screen for viewing. It is great for your office desktop. It is a bit heavy, may be hard to travel with. Printing may be hard if your printer does not have a usb port. It has great graphics and sound. I would recommend it to a friend.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Great sound! The graphic features are so crisp that at times I put my sunglasses on at night. Speedy mouse pad; keyboard comfortable. Love its looks when closed like a polished top of a car.

Weaknesses: No parallel or PS/2 ports. However, quickly solved with a replicator plugged into one of the three USB ports. Battery life short. No place for a second one. A bit heavy for travel.

Overall Evaluation: I replaced my bulky computer with this laptop. Much more space on my desk. Its 15 inches screen alone uses a lot of battery life, therefore I keep it mostly plugged in. I added an extra keyboard with all the handy connection features. Love my new setup and am not permanently stuck behind my desk. I have not traveled with it yet but as a desktop replacement I can highly recommend it.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Has all the goodies I was looking for in a laptop--great graphics and sound, slot for smart media card, large HD (30 GB) and tons of memory (512 Mb), all for a low, low price.

Weaknesses: Very low battery life, heavy, no docking station capability, have to buy adapters extra, though the 3.5" floppy is included.

Overall Evaluation: Other comments about screen whiteness can be solved just by adjusting the tilt of the screen. This laptop works like a charm. I do a lot of graphics-intensive programs and desktop publishing and this handles them easily. With all the connection options, a LAN and 56 K modem (separate by the way), plus two pc card slots, this has become my office away from my office. Too bad the battery life is so slow because that means I must always carry the adapter, which adds to the bulky weight. Overall, the pluses far outweigh any of the minuses.

Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504 Review

- WHAT'S HOT: The Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504 gives hard-core multimedia and gadget enthusiasts several reasons to salivate: It has out-of-this-world sound, flash-media card slots, three USB ports, and a case that (when closed) looks like the polished hood of a sports car. The Satellite 5005-S504 makes beautiful music thanks to a small set of Harman/Kardon stereo speakers backed by a subwoofer on the bottom of the notebook. The speakers--which jut from the back corners of the keyboard--and the audio controls on the front of the notebook remain exposed when you close the lid. A dedicated power button allows you to kick back and enjoy a CD whether the notebook is on or shut down. The volume wheel, located beneath the fixed DVD-ROM and CD-RW combination drive on the right, can turn the speakers up as high as they will go--which is very loud--and the Satellite 5005-S504 doesn't distort or fuzz the sound, as most notebooks do.
