Small-footprint system deserves a better monitor.

WHAT'S HOT: This tiny desktop model's small footprint will suit cramped work environments. The basic beige case also comes with a stand that allows it to sit on its side and function as a minitower. Its two front-mounted USB ports complement two on the back of the system. Microphone and headphone jacks can also be found on the front of the unit; a bundled mike and set of headphones complete the deal. The 1700N's thick overall system manual features plenty of helpful illustrations and thorough upgrade and troubleshooting information.

WHAT'S NOT: Running Windows Me, this PIII-667-based system with a measly 64MB of RAM earned a 115 score on our PC WorldBench 2000 tests. We haven't tested enough systems with this configuration to make an adequate comparison, but it's certainly slow performance for $1399. Though the 15-inch Optiquest Z50 CRT monitor delivered rich colors, it displayed fuzzy text at 800 by 600 resolution and difficult-to-read characters at the maximum resolution of 1280 by 1024. Both video and audio are integrated, which can lead to inferior multimedia performance.

WHAT ELSE: Our system came bundled with Microsoft Works Suite 2000 (seven CD-ROMs in all). Inside the unit's small case, only two half-height PCI slots are available for expansion. Typing proved clacky but smooth on the well-constructed Logitech multimedia keyboard, which offers 12 programmable hot keys and volume controls.

BEST USE: If you need a PC to fit into tight corners in a small business, this Kingdom could work. But we recommend you upgrade the monitor--another $75 will get you the 17-inch Optiquest Z70, a much better display.
