Handspring VISOR PRISM . (Handspring-1008NA)

Handspring Visor Prism
April 29, 2002
WHAT'S HOT: The Visor Prism's bright color screen can display 65,536 colors and is easy to read in low light. Like the Visor Pro, the Prism uses a rechargeable battery. The unit's cheerful, cobalt-blue plastic casing and Springboard slot for adding expansion devices such as MP3 players make it a great handheld for students.
WHAT'S NOT: The unfortunate flip side to the brightness of the Prism's screen indoors is its poor readability outside. In direct sun (or any bright light) the screen is too dark to use. Also, the Prism's screen has a much lower resolution than that of Pocket PC PDAs (160 by 160, versus 240 by 320), creating a rather blocky look. And although the rechargeable battery will save you money in the long run, you can't remove it to swap in an emergency backup. Worse, you'll have to drag the syncing cradle along to recharge because the Prism has no DC-in port (the AC adapter plugs into a Y connection on the cradle's USB plug). Finally, the Visor Prism is a tad thicker than the Visor Pro and includes only half the memory.
WHAT ELSE: One of Handspring's older models, the Visor Prism has dropped from $449 since its launch a year ago to a more reasonable $265. It sports a cheerful cobalt-blue case with a matching USB syncing cradle and a gray, lightweight plastic stylus. A leather sheath cover also comes in the box.
UPSHOT: Only a little more expensive than the Visor Pro, the $265 Visor Prism is a tad thicker and includes only half the memory. But its bright 16-bit color screen is the best choice here for low-light use.

Strengths: Color Screen, Cellular phone capability, great accessory ability with swap out modules.
Weaknesses: Limited internal memory.
Overall: At the time this product first emerged, there was no other competitor that could even come close to matching the abilities of this PDA. Handspring shocked the world with the release of this product. Not only was it state of the art for its time but it is a very durable product.

Strengths: Great product when it works.
Weaknesses: My Visor Prism worked for about 6 months when the battery cradle began to malfunction. Over the next 6 months that malfunction resulted in the PDA itself malfunctioning.
Overall: I have written twice to Handspring's Customer Service Department (one was a certified letter with a return card) to try to get help with this expensive PDA of which I had grown fond. Handspring has never responded to either of my requests for help.

Strengths: Versatile, easy-to-use, color, many programs, very expandable.
Weaknesses: battery memory can build up; plastic casing is very fragile.
Overall: I use the Prism for hours everyday. It is very versatile, easy to use, the color screen is excellent, there are thousands of extra programs available, the expansion port offers extreme expandability. I work in the medical field and the availability of 3rd party software has allowed me to stop carrying several huge books around. Plus, easy to install software, and many games available! If you recharge it before it goes dead, your battery life WILL shorten. The plastic casing is very fragile... I have many cracks and it has never been dropped. The company would repair it, but I can't be without it. Otherwise, no other complaints.... would highly recommend.

Strengths: rich color display; multifunction stylus;accepts springboard modules; sturdy; dependable
Weaknesses: display not well suited for outdoor viewing in sunlight; snapcover not colormatched and doesn't snap behind like visor deluxe; should ship with blue stylus not graphite
Overall: I have had my Prism for over 6 months and it hasn't let me down yet. Extremely versatile PDA can accept dozens of springboard modules (MP3,digital camera, memory, games, phones, books, remote controller, back-up, voice recorder, vibrating pager, etc.)and attachments like a folding keyboard. Hundreds of 3rd party software programs that make excellent use of the Palm OS. Once you've owned a color capable handheld, you will never settle for less. Biggest downsides are: poor screen visibility in sunlight; there is no place to put the snap cover while the PDA is in use; and the graphite cover and stylus are a poor match for the cobalt blue casing of the handheld. Overall, the positives outweight the negatives and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a step up from monochrome PDAs. Well worth its new lower price.
