Samsung Syncmaster 955DF Review
This affordable display from Samsung includes a highlight feature valuable for graphics users.

WHAT'S HOT: The 955DF's $299 price tag is well below the average for 19-inch CRT displays we've tested. A button on the 955DF's bezel allows you to select a portion of the screen that you wish to focus on by "highlighting" it: The screen surrounding that area becomes darkened slightly. Once you've chosen the size of the highlighted area you wish to work in, you can adjust the contrast; the red, green, and blue color; the color temperature; and the sharpness. You also can zoom to a spot within that zone. The control would be useful for those who do heavy image editing and wish to focus on one small part of the screen--for instance, when removing red-eye from a photo.
WHAT'S NOT: The 955DF didn't fare well in our image tests: Text looked fuzzy and became difficult to read at small point sizes. Colors looked dull, and photos failed to capture the detail evident on other displays.
WHAT ELSE: The rest of the 955DF's on-screen display, which you can access using five controls on the bezel, are fairly easy to use. Samsung provides its usual detailed manual.
UPSHOT: Though the 955DF's highlight feature may be useful for graphics use, its less-than-impressive image quality should compel graphics professionals and image editors to look elsewhere.

Strengths: Looked good in the store. Was priced better then the view sonic.
Weaknesses: Compared it to the view sonic my brother had when I got home, the contrast was nowhere as good. The view sonic has a true flat look, and looks great.
Overall Evaluation: I went to the store to actually buy a view sonic, but they were out of them, the salesman talked me into this monitor saying it was just as good, and was cheaper. As I said the picture quality was no where near the sonic. And now as I write this, the monitor is flickering, and getting color wash out. Like the other ppl who wrote reviews, it seems I got a lemon. Might be a bargon at 100 dollars if you didn't get a lemon, otherwise spend the extra 50 dollars, I wish I had.

Strengths: GREAT PICTURE AND COLOR !GREAT Contrasts !Seems like the older review problems have been correct.
Weaknesses: Cheap power switchVERY deep monitor, make sure you measureVERY heavy monitor, you have a cheap shelf? Beware
Overall Evaluation: For me, this monitor is an A+++ The only thing I don't like is the depth and the cheap switch on the front. My switch broke, it still turns on and off but its is now floppy. But that isn't stopping me from buying another unit very soon. With the price of the flat screens, this monitor is a DEAL at $169. I purchased it from Dell on sale for over $225, we bought two of them and right from the box it was soooo easy to set up. In five minutes I had the best picture I have ever seen, and both monitors display alike. Wait until you see how real the pictures are on this monitor! Colors are PERFECT and my kids games are unbelievable. If you have the space, the shelf space you should not be disappointed with this unit. As I said, for the price I'm buying at least one more, maybe too.
