iRiver SlimX IMP-350 CD/CDR/MP3 Player (iRiver America-IMP350)

IRiver America IMP-350 SlimX
SlimX IMP-350 CD/CDR/MP3 Player (iRiver America-IMP350) Review, by Michael Gowan July 22, 2002

Like Apple's IPod, IRiver America's IMP-350 SlimX garners looks of envy from passersby. The trim case of this MP3 CD player is only a smidgen larger than a CD and as thick as two CD cases, significantly smaller than most MP3 CD players. The casing also features minimal functions--play, stop, forward, back, and volume, but no display. Instead, the SlimX moves the display and menu functions to the remote control on the headphone cable. The small LCD screen packs a lot of information into a little area (including artist and track details), as well as a graphic equalizer. You also use it to navigate among the hundreds of songs you can pack onto an MP3 CD. The tiny screen doesn't help this process, though having the information it provides on a remote that you can clip to your belt is convenient.
The player has great skip protection and an external AA-battery carrier pack for those really long road trips when you would likely use up its rechargeable batteries. You'll need your own CD-burning software to rip the MP3 files and create an MP3 CD, as the unit doesn't come with any. Fortunately, most CD-RW drives come with the necessary software.
UPSHOT: The SlimX's great looks, slender case, and convenient LCD on the remote overcome some of the problems with MP3 CD players, but its poor file management offsets its advantages to a degree.

Strengths: Very sleek design, great sound, does not skip, reads any CD. Rechargeable battery and backup AA batteries for long trips. FM Tuner with presets.
Weaknesses: I don't like the earbuds and the remote is a little hard to read.
Overall: It took a while to figure out all the things you can do with the remote, but I would not trade it for anything. I like that it reads any CD, so no matter what kind of CD I have in my bag, or if a friend gives me a CD to play, it plays. I have taken it on my vaccation and connected small portable speakers, so everyone can hear while laying on the beach or by the pool. Great FM reception as well if you get bored with your CD. All it needs is a good carrying bag, but this is really a personal choice. I spend some time finding just the right one for me.All in All I have only praises for this player.

Strengths: High quality unit. Great looking. Sounds great with the EQ. The remote is pretty easy to use once you figure out how to use it. Plays all sorts of media (mp3, wma, asf, and cds). Power options.
Weaknesses: Text screen on remote can be difficult to read, other than that, I have found no fault with my IMP-350.
Overall: I am quite pleased with my IMP-350! I believe that this unit was worth every penny I paid for it(119@BB). I did quite a bit of research before buying this unit and was unsure about IRiver because I had never heard of them, but after reading more and talking to more people in electronics I was sure that I had made the right choice. This unit rocks!

Strengths: Does not skip at all, plays MP3, WMA, and ASF as well as normal CDs. Also has FM tuner.
Weaknesses: The earbuds that it comes with are not very good.
Overall: The SlimX does not skip at all while playing. The remote is great because it shows the names of the songs that you are listening to. It can play MP3, WMA, and ASF as well as normal Cd's. The FM tuner is also nice because if the CDs that you are listening to get boring, you can switch on the radio. And there's upgradeable firmware. In conclusion, I definitely think that this can easily be the best portable CD/MP3 player around (even better than ANY Sony), and is worth the money.
