Panasonic PV-DV702
PV-DV702 MiniDV (0.68MP, 10X Optical, 700X Digital, 3.5 Review, by Richard Baguley July 23, 2002

The PV-DV702 is one of the larger and more expensive camcorders we've tested, but it comes with plenty of features that justify its size and cost. For instance, in addition to its ability to record video to MiniDV tapes, it can serve as a Webcam through its USB 1.1 or FireWire connection. It can also record still images to the bundled 8MB Secure Digital card at a resolution of up to 1600 by 1200 pixels--that's the same resolution you'd get from a 2-megapixel still camera, though in our experience the image quality is not as good as that of the typical dedicated still camera.
The PV-DV702 can take video in low-light situations, as well. You can control a small light on the front via a button on the camera's top; also included are an infrared illuminator for shooting in complete darkness and a long-exposure shutter mode that makes the most of existing light. With this combination of different approaches, this camcorder should be able to record video in pretty much any lighting situation. The quality of the video recorded with the infrared illuminator and long-exposure mode, however, will not be as good as what you get filming in daylight.
The camcorder handles well: It fits securely in your grip, and you need only one hand to use the recording controls and access the on-screen menu. However, it is much bulkier than some of the other camcorders we've looked at; while the Sony DCR-IP5 easily fits into a coat pocket, for instance, this Panasonic model needs to be carried in a case.
The PV-DV702's combination of features helps to make this camcorder our current top pick. While it is slightly more expensive than some competitors, its range of offerings means it's a great model in general. Note, however, that some useful features are missing--you get no S-Video or composite input ports, so you can't record video from other sources such as an older analog camcorder.
UPSHOT: For general use, the PV-DV702 provides a great set of features at a reasonable price. Those who want portability and who don't mind paying a bit more, though, may want to look at the Canon Elura 40MC or the Sony DCR-IP5.

Strengths: NONE
Weaknesses: POOR QUALITY
Overall: Camcorder had very little use failed within the first year of ownership, cost 171.00 for labor to repair withPanasonic. After repair camera was used for approximately 3 hours over the next year based on tape usage and had a repeat failure. Panasonicwill not provide any good will being its over their 30 day repair warranty. Panasonic no longer repairs in-house and sent the camera to Value Tech in CA. A company that will not answer your phone call or return a call. Three weeks after recieving the camera Value Tech called for authorization to diagnose with 199.00 repair minimum. The camera is not worth the repair bill just to fail again. Panasonic manufactures an excellent boat anchor. Most reputable companies would offer good will to keep a consumer happy. Not Panasonic.

Strengths: None
Weaknesses: Destroys tape and memories
Overall: Brought this camcorder around 3 years back. Since than I have sent this camcorder back for repairs atleast 4 times and again this is lying at my home in a useless condition. It makes sound while recording, will cut into the tape and will not play back the previously recorded tapes. Everytime I send it to the panasonic authorised repair shop, they will send it back saying that it needed some cleaning and adjustment. After running for another week it will go back to it's original condition. Each and every repair costs time and money.I will say that it is one of the worst product from panasonic. In future I am never going to buy a panasonic product.

Overall: I have had my cam for a few months and just love it. I have not had any problems what so ever with the use of it. It took some practice of course, yet beyond that I am on my way to having some really great vacation and family video's! :)

Overall: i am highly pissed off! I just boought this camera, well just rcv'd via priority mail today. I read the instructions. plugged it up put the tape in and immediately heard this annoying humming winding type sound (no it wasnt the tape) the noise records on to the tape. The noise also occurs just when the tape is sitting in the carriage. I called the factory/manufacture and they said send it back because they DON'T THINK it is suppose to be doing this. It sucks. ikeway@mwr.is
