The PV-DV702 is one of the larger and more expensive camcorders we've tested, but it comes with plenty of features that justify its size and cost. For instance, in addition to its ability to record video to MiniDV tapes, it can serve as a Webcam through its USB 1.1 or FireWire connection. It can also record still images to the bundled 8MB Secure Digital card at a resolution of up to 1600 by 1200 pixels--that's the same resolution you'd get from a 2-megapixel still camera, though in our experience the image quality is not as good as that of the typical dedicated still camera.

The PV-DV702 can take video in low-light situations, as well. You can control a small light on the front via a button on the camera's top; also included are an infrared illuminator for shooting in complete darkness and a long-exposure shutter mode that makes the most of existing light. With this combination of different approaches, this camcorder should be able to record video in pretty much any lighting situation. The quality of the video recorded with the infrared illuminator and long-exposure mode, however, will not be as good as what you get filming in daylight.

The camcorder handles well: It fits securely in your grip, and you need only one hand to use the recording controls and access the on-screen menu. However, it is much bulkier than some of the other camcorders we've looked at; while the Sony DCR-IP5 easily fits into a coat pocket, for instance, this Panasonic model needs to be carried in a case.

The PV-DV702's combination of features helps to make this camcorder our current top pick. While it is slightly more expensive than some competitors, its range of offerings means it's a great model in general. Note, however, that some useful features are missing--you get no S-Video or composite input ports, so you can't record video from other sources such as an older analog camcorder.

UPSHOT: For general use, the PV-DV702 provides a great set of features at a reasonable price. Those who want portability and who don't mind paying a bit more, though, may want to look at the Canon Elura 40MC or the Sony DCR-IP5.
