Canon USA Elura 40MC Review

by Richard Baguley

A lot of features in an easily portable package, but some aspects of this MiniDV camcorder disappoint.

Canon gets a lot into a small package with the Elura 40MC. Though the camcorder weighs just under 14 ounces, it includes a Secure Digital card slot for storing still images and a bright 2-inch LCD screen that's easily viewable in everything but direct sunlight (the screen is smaller than those on many other camcorders, however). You can rotate the screen, so you can even videotape yourself and watch while you're recording.

The 40MC has no infrared illuminator, but the automatic exposure modes do an excellent job of quickly adjusting the aperture and shutter speed as the lighting adjusts; the camcorder will quickly adapt when you move from daylight to indoor lighting, for instance. The camcorder has eight modes such as Sport (which uses the fastest shutter speed to capture action) and low light (which uses a slow shutter speed to make the most of existing light).

Also included are composite and S-Video input and output ports, so you can use the 40MC to convert video from an older analog format to digital.

The microphone is a little disappointing, though. As with many other smaller camcorders, the microphone is located on the top of the camcorder, near the viewfinder. Microphones positioned this way pick up more noise from outside of the camera's field of view than do camcorder microphones located on the case front. In particular, if the person holding the camcorder speaks or coughs, it can drown out other sounds, such as the subject of the video. Although the 40MC does have an input for an external microphone, there is no way to mount it on the camcorder without buying the SA-1 Adapter Bracket, which costs $40.

UPSHOT: The Canon Elura 40MC packs a lot of features into a unit small enough to fit into your coat pocket for shooting video while you're on vacation. It is on the expensive side, however.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Tiny, good picture (not great), features, ease of use

Weaknesses: picture is ok but not great, batteries only last a short time. Buy 2 batteries!

Overall Evaluation: I love the size and ease of use, the high price is a turn off, and with the picture only being good, not fantastic, i don't think its justified, but overall i would recommend it, I'd buy extra batteries though, wish I could tell at a glance if they were charged or not. Quick to change out tapes too, very nice.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Portability, It is smaller than some of the digital cameras. Its XGA still capability is a major plus point. Color balance on the still are excellent.

Weaknesses: Crammed ports on the unit. Though inevitable, the LCD is small.

Overall Evaluation: This is a unit that anyone can carry in their coat pocket and it is extremely flexible to get pictures and movies of action takin place anywhere. Except at extreme digital zooms, the camera is able to focus and adjust exposures on shots. The camera can get as close as 1 inch from a subject and the stills as well as movies are quite satisfactory. You will need a high end digicam to do this. Great for action catching reporters. XGA still make great picture cards. As far as shake-proofing is concerned I would rate it as below average. We have to be very steady handed and hence might restrict older people from using it. I am old fasioned and would have really prefered a native view finder rather than a LCD screen inside it. LCD screen is small but in 97% of the cases it is sufficient (of course it is not so good to check on playbacks). Amazing piece of equipment that has even permitted me to leave behind my 2.1 mp digital camera. Just got to hold the camcorder very steady to take the pictures or shift to sports-mode to pick on active subjects. This is a camera that would be in the technology forefront for many months to come... not easily outdated.
