Fuji FinePix 2800 Zoom
| Image quality: To gauge picture quality, we take a series of shots, with and without flash, at 640 by 480 resolution and at the camera's highest resolution. We photograph a complex still life and a mannequin to see how well each camera captures details and subtle colorings such as skin tones. A panel of judges reviews the on-screen and printed photos and assigns image-quality scores; we then average those scores. | Good |

Fujifilm FinePix 2800 Zoom
FinePix 2800 Zoom Review, by Nikki Echler McDonald and Carla Thornton September 25, 2002

This shiny, silvery metal 2-megapixel camera takes impressive shots and packs a few nifty features for an affordable $379. It includes a whopping 6X optical zoom and a bright electronic viewfinder, which lets you see your camera settings while you compose your shots; this works well for outdoor closeups taken in bright light. (Most digital cameras force you to use the LCD screen for macro shots.) The camera's battery life is phenomenal: We snapped 492 shots on four AA alkalines-the third-longest battery life of the cameras we tested.
The FinePix 2800 Zoom consistently ranked in the top third of its class for image quality. Though the camera produced low-contrast, slightly fuzzy shots in our outdoor tests, it captured colors and details nicely overall, both on-screen and in prints.
With its boxy shape and right-hand grip, the FinePix 2800 resembles the advanced cameras. But functionally, it's a point-and-shoot, with basic exposure controls tucked away in menus. Fortunately, the menus are easy to navigate, so you can make your selections relatively quickly. A simple switch on top includes icons for shooting, playback, and menu modes only, forcing you to wade through the menus to access such commonly used features as flash, macro mode, and delete.
Unlike most point-and-shoots, the FinePix 2800 Zoom does not have any programmed scene modes for hard-to-shoot situations, but it does come with useful metering options, broad exposure compensation (11 steps in 0.3-EV increments), five flash modes, six resolution/compression options, macro and movie modes, and 30-second voice annotation. You also get a 16MB SmartMedia card and an extensive software package that includes Adobe PhotoDeluxe 4.0 for Windows users (though we'd have preferred to get the newer Adobe Elements).
UPSHOT: The $379 FinePix 2800 Zoom is a solid buy, offering long battery life, impressive image quality, and the convenience of through-the-lens-style viewing.

Strengths: Size, Quality of Pics, Ease of Use, self timer
Weaknesses: view finder dark indoors especially at night.
Overall: I bought this camera brand new years ago when it first came out. This spring (2006) I finally had to look for a new camera. Not because the camera is no good, but because my wife dropped it and the lense no longer retracts and pics are blurred. I loved this camera. It took great pictures in all situations. Family gatherings, posed pictures, and i especially loved the cameras rapid photo mode. I used the mode at several of my daughters softball tounaments and the pictures came out great. I was able to take a series of pics while she was batting and the timing was perfect to get the entire sequence of action captured. My pictures received lots of praise and seemed to steam the other dad photographers with camera that were 3 or 4 times the cost. The zoom works great, take a look at the photo I submitted of the team pitcher on the mound. I took this pic from my seat in the stands.

Strengths: For being my first webcam purchase, i'm quite happy with it. it produces a greater image than i thought it would, and it has a high zoom factor.
Weaknesses: no aud/vid out, no assist lamp for AF, LCD a bit dark
Overall: I'm rally happy with this camera as my first purchase, and i got it for a decent price too, about $250. or, i at least thought it was a decent price. it is a lower megapixel entry level camera, but i found all of the photos i took to be nearly flawless unless i was shakey myself. i wasn't too happy about not have lamp assisted AF, but i'm also used to using a Nikon Pronea S SLR camera, which has all that stuff on it. overall, for a first purchase, i'm pleased. sure it has it's downfalls, but unless you want to spend a mint on a camera, it's going to have downfalls. i'm totally pleased with it thus far, and would recomend it to anyone looking for a good starter camera, or even beyond that.

Strengths: light settings, no grainy look as with some, versatile in any condition, compact and lightweight.
Weaknesses: none that I've seen.
Overall: Well, I did see one weakness and that was at the time I wanted to take shots of the moon. It took me nearly 2 days to get just the right setting, and had to buy a tripod, otherwise it was a little shaky. After that, my moon shots can't be beat. I have tried other digi-cams throughout the years, and by far, this is the best I've worked with. I believe with a little playing at the settings, one can come up with any beautiful shot. This camera makes it just so easy. My graphic designs have now flourished due largely in part to this camera. I've over 1400 pictures taken, easily, and I will keep taking them with this precious gem.
