Olympus C-4000 Zoom Review
by Nikki Echler McDonald and Carla Thornton
Inexpensive advanced model takes excellent shots.

At $450, the C-4000 Zoom is an inexpensive advanced digital camera that doesn't skimp on features. Besides offering manual control of aperture and shutter speed, the camera can shoot in black-and-white, and it has a multiburst mode. We liked the option to take TIFFs at most resolutions, and the handy virtual-dial menu made switching among shooting modes and four sets of user-saved settings easy (though the menu disappears quickly when you're trying to make a selection). A dedicated button on the back jumps you to Digital Print Order Format (DPOF) settings.
The C-4000 Zoom outshone nearly all of its rivals in our image-quality tests, with the third-best overall score we've recorded to date. Photos looked good on-screen and in print-only slight overexposure and loss of detail in flash mode brought its score down. The C-4000 Zoom's battery life of 700 shots on two CRV3 disposables is extremely impressive, though well behind the astounding 1100 shots managed by the fifth-ranked Olympus C-720 Ultra Zoom. Alas, replacement CRV3 cells cost about $10 apiece, so most photographers will probably opt for less-durable but far cheaper rechargeable batteries. (You can also use standard AA batteries in a pinch.)
The Olympus C-4000 has some rough edges, including a stubborn diopter wheel, stepped playback zooms, and cryptic menu labels. It also has an awkwardly placed thumbpad: Situated above the right top corner of the LCD, the thumbpad's directional arrows are hard to reach while you hold the camera with one hand. The camera's manual focusing mode is difficult to use, requiring a lot of button pressing to set and then cancel the setting, but the autofocus mode gives you the option of moving the center-of-focus brackets to any part of the screen.
UPSHOT: The C-4000 Zoom is an inexpensive choice for hobbyists who seek a feature-rich camera that takes excellent photos.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: The quality of the picture is excellent. There are many many extra features. Lots of things to change for a different picture. Great to start using, easy to learn.
Weaknesses: I believe the menus are confusing. The size as it's a little on the "Big" side.
Overall Evaluation: I have had my camera for about 4 years. I just signed up for a photo class on digital cameras. I dusted off the manual and boy. This camera does more than I could ever ask for. I was going to buy a new one. But I see this will be a great starter camera to learn on. There's so many features I am not sure how I'll remember them all. It takes great pictures. I have over 1000 pictures I have taken. The ones that are bad were my fault. I am very happy with this camera.

Strengths: Picture Quality, number of manual controls.
Weaknesses: Slow, large size, lens cap.
Overall Evaluation: This is the fourth digicam I have owned and let me say first that none of the other, more fancy, smaller, cuter, sleeker, faster cameras will match this ones picture quality. I am one of the most fussy people I know when it comes to my pictures and these are stunning every time. The quality for me comes in the detail and true colors. I have owned two kodak digital cameras, one fuji, and one sony and they all overprocess the pictures to look more colorful and more tinted. I like the natural beauty of things and people and do not like things oversaturated. I have two young children and want to capture every moment of their childhoods and how they really are. I also own a very good Nikon SLR camera and this comes very close to those pictures. The lens cap is a little annoying but the larger lenses typically take better photos so I will deal with it. After all you buy a camera for the wonderful pictures it will take and not the size. If you are condisering this camera, buy it and you will not be disappointed.
