WHAT'S HOT: PGI-Verbatim's 40x12x48 VBT-401248A achieved a top-notch score on our CD-RW write test. Taking 1 minute, 6 seconds to write 100MB to CD-RW using packet writing, the drive tied with three other drives--including our number one drive, the Pacific Digital Mach 48. It's also among the top drives in CD-ROM read performance, ranking third overall on our read tests (which include an application installation and digital audio extraction).
WHAT'S NOT: At $110, this drive carries a relatively high price compared with its faster competitors.
WHAT ELSE: The drive took 3 minutes, 13 seconds to write 650MB of files to CD-R using the bundled Ahead Nero Burning ROM 5.5 software. (Ahead's InCD 3.22 is included for packet-writing tasks.) The fastest 48X drive we've tested to date--the Pacific Digital Mach 48--did the same work about 37 faster (or 19 percent less time). Extras include a CD label applicator accessory, as well as audio and IDE cables. Documentation is adequate. In addition to weekday support, the vendor accepts calls for 4 hours on Saturdays.
UPSHOT: An adequately fast CD-R and CD-RW writer, but faster drives cost less.
