Samsung SyncMaster 172T
SyncMaster 172T Review, by Alexandra Krasne April 8, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: Samsung's sleek, silver flat-panel is one of the most attractive LCDs we've reviewed. The monitor is only about an inch thick and has a matching square stand. Other style highlights include a unique hinged base that allows the panel to extend up and out to adjust its viewing angle. The unit can also fold down flat against its base for easy toting.
We retested the SyncMaster 172T using its digital video input (it will also accept an analog video signal). Graphics fared slightly better than text. Skin tones, for instance, appeared natural in our test photos. While the monitor produced crisp letters and fonts, text didn't look as sharp or as crisp as on its sibling, the SyncMaster 172B. The display reproduced finely distinguishable black and white lines without shimmering.
Samsung doesn't stint on tech support; the company offers 24-hour daily toll-free assistance.
WHAT'S NOT: Unlike other models we retested for this review, the 172T didn't get cheaper. Though the 172T's $680 price tag was about average when we first tested it, the monitor now seems pricey compared to others. After the Eizo Nanao FlexScan L565, the 172T carries the heftiest price on our chart.
WHAT ELSE: An eight-page booklet describes in detail how to install drivers for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Linux.
UPSHOT: Based on current prices, this model is expensive, especially if you don't care about high style.

Strengths: Sharp Text No ghosting with DVI input Frees up a lot of desk space bright...had to turn it down to 50%
Weaknesses: One dead pixel but took me 2 weeks to even notice it.
Overall: This monitor was the most expensive part of my new computer but I just didn't want to have to make space for a 19" CRT behemoth. This is simply a great monitor. Was playing Quake 3 last night with all the settings turned up to max. Beautiful. No ghosting or streaking. A previous reviewer said tha his didn't come with a DVI cable, but according to the box mine came with, both analog and DVI cables are standard equipment. Text is ultra sharp at 1200x1024. Colors are fantastic.

Strengths: Clarity, brightness, footprint, controls.
Weaknesses: A bit pricy.
Overall: A side-by-side comparison to other flat panels revealed the strengths of this monitor: Sleekness: small frame around screen--optimized overall size Display: Overall, seemed sharper and brighter than the rivals Physical Design: Very small footprint and easily adjusted User Interface: as good or better than the rivals I just wish that these things weren't so pricy, but if you think about it, you gain a whole desktop/workspace from what used to be a BIG monitor stand.

Strengths: Sharp text & fantastic colr & clarity
Weaknesses: NONE!!!
Overall: I was looking for a large LCD display. I was dead set on the VX900 but the text display was horrible. Although this monitor has a smaller viewable area, it has a better dot pitch, making the graphics at least bearable for an LCD. If you are a graphics professional like myself, this is the LCD for you.

Overall: This monitor is great. Easy to set-up and easy on the eyes. It's also great with games, video, and pictures. The warranty is excellent but I have had no problems at all with this monitor. A pleasure to own and use.
