Canon i320 Color Bubble Jet Printer Review

- WHAT'S HOT: Canon's $79 i320 is the least expensive ink jet we tested for our January 2003 roundup, yet it turns out brightly colored, subtly textured glossy photos and clean--if slightly grayish--text on ordinary paper. It prints narrow lines reasonably well--a challenging feat for most ink jets. Its performance doesn't set any records, but at 4.7 pages per minute on text--about 1 ppm slower than the average for the general-purpose printers we reviewed--you won't grow too impatient waiting for your letters and memos. Canon provides an excellent set-up poster, a useful printed user's manual, and an extensive HTML manual on CD-ROM that covers details such as hand duplexing and improving print quality.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Very inexpensive. Good quality color prints. Perfect for home office.

    Weaknesses: None found yet.

Overall Evaluation: Light weight and small, so it takes up little room on the desk. Color prints are of good quality. Better than the Canon BJC 620 we have.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Low cost (I paid $30 on sale), small, cartridge price reasonable

Weaknesses: Older model, probably out of production.

Overall Evaluation: If you need a low cost color printer, this should fill the bill. The color prictures I print are very good and people comment how good they are even though this is not a photo printer. This is not the best printer by any means, but for the $30 I paid, that is less than the cost of many cartridges and you get a printer. Although this printer in discontinued, it uses the same cartridges as the replacement printer so cartridges should be available for quite awhile. This printer has only USB connection which I don't see as a problem since all computers in the last few years have it. The software driver seems to work with no problems, which I can't say about other printers I have had.
