ABS Sensation 1300
Sensation 1300 Review, by Mick Lockey January 8, 2003
WHAT'S HOT: ABS's Sensation 1300 arrived with a 1.8-GHz Athlon XP 2200+ CPU and 256MB of DDR400 SDRAM, and earned an extraordinary PC WorldBench 4 score of 120--by far, it's the fastest PC we've tested among similarly priced systems. This machine also has plenty of opportunities for growth, more than we usually see at this price and considerable for its midsize-tower height: You get five available PCI slots and five open drive bays for additional hard drives or removable-media drives.
The 1300 also includes a GeForce MX440-based graphics card with 64MB of SDRAM; it was one of three systems in our under-$900 category (the Compaq Evo D310 Microtower and the FreewayTech Innovation A7000 being the others) to offer a dedicated graphics board. The midrange MX440 card gave the Sensation 1300 sufficient 3D-gaming horsepower to run Unreal Tournament 2003 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein at resolutions of 1024 by 768 or less. At higher resolutions, either the frame rates were too low or the games would not run.
The stylish Logitech Z-340 two-speaker and subwoofer set thumped out satisfying bass notes, and vocal tracks had clear, warm tones. The right satellite has handy controls for adjusting the volume, as well as a convenient headphone jack.
WHAT'S NOT: Playing DVD movies, we noticed periodic skips and stutters during high-motion action scenes. Colors looked a bit bland, too. Also, while playing a session of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, we saw shimmering and jagged edges on some objects.
WHAT ELSE: ABS sent a flat-screen, 17-inch SyncMaster 753DF CRT with the Sensation 1300; at a 1024 by 768 resolution and 85-Hz refresh rate, it displayed clean, legible text for all of the fonts in our test image, while a test photo had bright colors and accurate skin tones. The monitor can handle resolutions up to 1280 by 1024, though only at 66-Hz refresh rates, beyond which you may see screen flicker. Typical of many of today's new systems, the Sensation 1300 has six USB 2.0 ports, two up front and four on the back panel. Also present are a 16X DVD-ROM drive and a 48X/12X/48X CD-RW drive--not uncommon now, even in this price category. You don't get tool-less upgrading at this price point, however: The machine's side panel comes off with two large thumbscrews, and though the interior cabling is neatly taped, you'll need a screwdriver to install drives and cards.
Documentation is well organized and clearly written; it's packaged in a large yellow binder that includes a basic guide to ABS computers, individual component manuals, and driver CDs (which are tucked away in sturdy, color-coded, resealable plastic sheets). ABS warrants the Sensation 1300 for three years, which trumps the baseline one-year warranty provided by competing vendors in the low-cost PC market.
UPSHOT: As close as you can get to having it all: low price, impressive performance, and a solid set of features.

Strengths: Great multi media package SyncMaster 753DF 17" DynaFlate CRT #1 selling monitor
Weaknesses: none
Overall: This pc has just about everything you can ask for, plus. And coming as a package, everything works out of the box. No worrying about trying to find drivers or trying to kludge something up. Very fast DVD/CD writer and even faster CD ROM. I'm used to an older, slower box and this thing is so fast at recording CDs that it actually started to irritate me. I would just start to do something else and it would be finished. After a month I'm still discovering some of the software that came with it. This XP Multi Media os is great, it is a superset of XP Pro. Like XP it is super stable. Just for laughs I hooked the TV cable up and the multi media was a snap to get working. I now have a mini tv working on my screen. I'm very satisfied and I think it is an excellent buy for the money.
