Polywell Poly 880NF2-2700
Poly880NF2-2700 Review, by Mick Lockey February 4, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: The Poly 880NF2-2700 arrives updated with a faster processor and faster memory than earlier versions of the 880NF we've tested. This unit features a 2.17-GHz Athlon XP 2700+ processor and 512MB of DDR333 memory, which helped the PC earn an outstanding score of 128 on PC WorldBench 4 tests, in the neighborhood of the highest we've seen to date.
Polywell pairs dual 80GB hard drives connected in a RAID setup. The PC World Test Center has found that similar RAID setups can speed up large data transfers. The system has four USB 2.0 ports (two on the front and two on the rear), as well as four FireWire ports (one on the front and three on the back). The DVD-RW/-R drive provides a great way to record videos or back up critical data.
WHAT'S NOT: The 19-inch AOC 9Glrs CRT didn't handle text well in our tests: Colors looked realistic in screens of a photo, but small font sizes (at 7.5 point sizes and below) on text screens appeared fuzzy at a resolution of 1280 by 1024. The monitor's chassis is beige, bulky, and mismatched with the modern-looking midsize tower. For a spiffier-looking display, check our recent Top 10 19-inch Monitors chart for recommendations.
WHAT ELSE: Our stylish test unit arrived with a snazzy brushed aluminum case. A bonus for computer enthusiasts, the front panel has blinking LED lights in a window that displays the processor's temperature as well as the current time.
The LeadTek WinFast A250 Ultra graphics card is based on NVidia's GeForce4 Ti 4600 chip set and boasts 128MB of graphics memory. In addition, it offers DVI, VGA, and TV-out ports as well as being able to drive two monitors simultaneously--a great feature for both gamers and multitaskers.
The unit's Viewsonic wireless keyboard and matching four-button mouse use RF transmission, making them handy for doing presentations. Cast in metallic tones, the keyboard feels solidly constructed, but the keys seemed too springy for our taste. There are 16 hot-keys for launching Internet-related applications and controlling volume.
Polywell's documentation includes a setup guide that mostly matches the system and a spiral-bound manual. The manual includes a few detailed chapters on upgrading and troubleshooting Polywell systems in general. Our test system came with Lotus SmartSuite 9.6 and a collection of video editing titles.
UPSHOT: This attractive PC's fast performance makes it suitable for offices, power home users, and frugal gamers.
