WHAT'S HOT: This charcoal-black LCD offers options that businesses appreciate. The ergonomic options include the capability to adjust the unit's height by a few inches. It also can pivot into portrait mode, which is useful for working on vertical-format files such as Web pages or long documents. And it has both analog and digital inputs.
This monitor displayed readily legible text on spreadsheet and newsletter screens, though we have seen sharper fonts and letters from other models. But the TFT 1520's text quality is certainly acceptable for typical business tasks like word processing. Our panel of judges rated its graphics a little more highly than its text because colors looked bright in test photos, and details generally looked crisp; judges did note some minor flaws such as blurred edges on some desktop icons, however.
WHAT'S NOT: We have one minor complaint: We would have liked a printed manual to use when we can't access the software version (during setup or a monitor malfunction, for example).
WHAT ELSE: The TFT 1520's intuitive on-screen controls consist of three buttons for accessing individual settings. Two of the buttons serve as one-touch brightness and contrast controls as well as handling adjustments of horizontal screen positioning. A dedicated button automatically centers the image horizontally and vertically; it worked well in our tests. One unusual setting in the on-screen menu is a Backlight icon, which shows the status of backlight usage. This could come in handy for large companies that need to track such information.
If you plan to use the display for playing games or working with multimedia files, you may want to spring for an optional $65 USB hub (with headphones).
Documentation includes a short set-up guide, plus a CD-ROM that contains the user's manual. The 50-page guide consists of a short troubleshooting section for common problems, an extensive section on making adjustments, and an explanation of the manufacturer's dead (or stuck) pixel policy.
UPSHOT: A good bet for corporate environments, the TFT 1520 offers good ergonomic features and above-average image quality.
