NEC Multisync 1560M Review
by Mick Lockey
Terrific colors, a USB 2.0 hub, and surprisingly good sound from built-in speakers distinguish this affordable flat-panel.

WHAT'S HOT: Topping the list of the MultiSync LCD1560M's desirable qualities is its image quality, especially on graphics. Tested using its digital input, the LCD earned the highest overall scores in our tests for displaying rich hues and evenly shaded colors on photos and Web pages. Text also looked impressive; letters and fonts were crisp and easy to read, thanks in part to an unusually bright white screen.
A USB 2.0 hub with one port for linking to a PC's USB slot and four ports for connecting devices is built into the unit's base. This is the first USB 2.0 hub we've seen in an LCD. The USB 2.0 ports accelerate the transfer of data between USB 2.0 devices and the computer. They ports are also compatible with older USB 1.1 devices (at slower transfer speeds).
We were surprised by the full sound that the built-in speakers produced; it ranked among the strongest we've heard from monitor speakers. Typically, integrated speakers generate wince-worthy audio, but these projected clear trebles and solid bass notes.
WHAT'S NOT: The controls are frustrating to use for several reasons. The control buttons are black and small, so they blend into the bezel, and their text labels are hard to read. In addition, the on-screen controls lack an intuitive user interface; we found ourselves ineffectually poking at the buttons until we consulted the manuals, whereas normally we can learn a well-designed on-screen control system with a little trial and error. The usability of the controls matters less if you use the digital input, because then you don't need to make manual adjustments. But if you're planning to use this monitor with a standard VGA connection, the controls may be a concern. (NaviSet software, which is available for download at the company's Web site, allows you to make adjustments via keyboard and mouse.)
WHAT ELSE: Unlike most flat-panel monitors, the LCD1560M didn't require a separate power adapter. The panel's base swivels up to 180 degrees, good if you plan on using the panel for presentations.
The review unit we tested was cast in black, but it's also available in a standard off-white version.
UPSHOT: This flat-panel monitor is an excellent choice for business or home users who want an LCD with multimedia features. Hard-to-maneuver on-screen controls are the only drawback.
