iRiver IFP-180T MP3 Player (iRiver America-IFP180T)

Bottom Line
Relatively low priced, elegant, and great sounding, the tiny IFP-180T is supremely portable. Considering its 256MB of memory, we could live without a media slot.

IFP-180T MP3 Player (iRiver America-IFP180T) Review, by Melissa J. Perenson January 30, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: At $199 and packed with 256MB of internal memory, this IRiver is the first flash player we've seen to come in at a price that's less than $1 per megabyte of storage. The player's sleek, tapered design makes it suitable for a pocket or for wearing around your neck as a pendant. Its tiny navigation joystick takes a little getting used to; once you get the hang of it, however, moving between folders and tracks is a breeze. Depending on how you move it, the joystick guides you through tracks, playback menu options, and volume control. The device has a wide selection of custom playback options (for example, you can control how quickly the unit scans through songs). And music sounded excellent through the included Sennheiser earpiece headphones.
WHAT'S NOT: Though the four-line LCD is generally more readable than the displays of most players we've reviewed, the screen is crowded with icons that are not critical during playback (the kilohertz and the kilobits per second at which a particular MP3 file was encoded, for example).
WHAT ELSE: The unit uses a single AA battery and ships with a cable to connect its USB 1.1 port to your PC. To transfer tunes, IRiver includes its easy-to-use IRiver Music Manager software. Three buttons along one side of the triangular player serve as controls for play/stop/power, playback memory and equalizer adjustments, and playback modes. The neck-strap ring on top swivels, preventing cord tangles, but the player is also so small that it will easily fit in a pocket or your hand. Due to its minuscule size, this is one of the few flash players we've tested that do not have a media slot--memorywise, what you get when you buy it is all you can have. The FM sound quality is good, and tuner presets let you pop directly to a favorite station with ease. The built-in microphone is adequate for voice recordings but may not suffice in noisy environments.
UPSHOT: Relatively low priced, elegant, and great sounding, the tiny IFP-190T is supremely portable. Considering its 256MB of memory, we could live without a media slot.

Weaknesses: it can only hold 27 songs and the FM radio is usually always staticy

Strengths: Alot of cool features. Sounds great.
Weaknesses: One year warranty means one year.
Overall: Well I have had it for a little over a year and it just stopped working. Used it for running loved it while it worked. Only 1 year warranty so took it apart being somewhat electronics savvy but no luck. Now its in the trash. Being that I run 4-5 times a week might have put a lot of stress on it. For the most part it was really nice to have.

Strengths: Lots of features in a small package.
Weaknesses: Awkward shape
Overall: It has numerous amounts of features, and the LCD display is very detailed. Though the shape of the iRiver is awkward, it is lightweight and fits in your pocket or the palm of your hand. Also, the FOUR hours of music it claims to store is at a 96 kbps bit rate. If you need more music, I would recommend the iFP-190T with 256 MB of memory.

Strengths: Very small. Good battery performance, transfer rates are fast on USB 1.*
Weaknesses: Confusing Menu system on the unit. You have to download the latest desktop software and firmware to get it to run WMA correctly. The leash on the unit is a decent idea.
Overall: I would recommend this to anyone who is a little technical. Overall this product works as or better than advertised. I have run and worked out with it everyday and after about 12 hours of operation I am still using the same battery! The menus system is just flat out lousy and takes some getting used to. I hope they continue to improve on that. Get yourself a small pack and some sports ear wear and you are set.

Strengths: Small, plays FM radio and lasts along time
Weaknesses: No expandable memory
Overall: Outstanding mp3 player, it is light weight and easily hooked up to your computer for really easy downloading. The only other problem with it is going through the stations takes along time. Other than that I have been completely satisfied and pleased with this product.
