NEC VT660 Projector XGA 1700ansi 6.6lbs Review

by Richard Jantz

Projector produces fairly good graphics and video, and acceptable text.

The $1995 NEC VT660 did not display text as well as it did graphics and motion: There was slight blurring on some text screens. Still, overall, the text results were far from the worst we saw in our test batch. Setup is simplified by the projector's automatic keystone correction, which adjusts the image into a straight-sided rectangle. Menu options are well organized and easy to navigate. The remote provides basic controls like mute, freeze frame, and magnify; but it lacks a laser pointer and picture in picture. Though the VT660 comes fully equipped with audio and video inputs, it isn't bundled with any cables, so you'll have to buy the ones you need. The unit's 1700-lumens brightness is powerful enough to serve medium-size groups, and its low price and respectable video quality make it a contender for home use.

UPSHOT: The reasonably priced NEC VT660 can serve small or medium-size groups, and it can double as a home unit.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: This unit displays graphics almost flawlessly. Moving pictures are crystal clear and the built in speaker, although not very powerful makes it easy to use almost anywhere.

Weaknesses: The text, although very clear was not as good as some units I've seen.

Overall Evaluation: This is an excellent unit for watching movies and using with a PC. I highly recommend it for the graphics quality alone, not to mention the different hookups that alow you to hook it up to virtually any media device you own. I use it at home and at the office and believe that it was one of the best purchases I've made in recent years.
