The low-cost ($1795) ViewSonic PJ-501 had the same problems in displaying XGA-resolution images that the other SVGA-resolution projectors we evaluated in April 2003 did. Its text screens, for instance, were noticeably blurrier than those from competing XGA-resolution units. The task of adjusting the projector's lens is unnecessarily tedious because you can easily reach only part of the recessed lens' zoom and focus rings. The ample cable bundle includes all of the video and audio connectors required for everything from multimedia presentations to home entertainment. On the other hand, the remote doesn't support cursor control, and it lacks a laser pointer.

UPSHOT: The budget-priced ViewSonic PJ-501 is best for presenters using SVGA notebooks who also want to show occasional movies at home.

Strengths: Price! Ease of use and versatility.

Weaknesses: This projector doesn't have DVI hook-ups but does have component.

Overall: I have been using this projector for my home theater. I don't even have a screen and the picture looks great. This projector has great specs but seeing is believing and this is a great projector for the price!
