DLink 54MBPS Wireless Router Airplus Xtreme G Review

by Becky Waring

The D-Link Wireless kit has good performance and is moderately priced, but the setup process lacked polish.

Kit consists of:

D-Link DI-624 router

D-Link DWLG520 PCI adapter

D-Link DWL-G650 PC Card adapter

This Super-G wireless kit has excellent range, very good performance, and thorough and easy-to-follow setup utilities. There are even little help buttons in many places to bring up context-sensitive help information. However, while this works well for general setup tasks, we found it somewhat lacking when it came to getting the kit running in the enhanced Super G mode, which involves many confusing parameters, and they are not all that well documented. We also found during our lab testing that we had to reboot the router occasionally after it appeared to crash or stop responding.

But setup quibbles aside, the D-Link is a top Wi-Fi router with all the bells and whistles. It performed well in our lab speed tests, achieving an average throughput of 16.3 mbps. And it is the second cheapest of the kits that we tested, at the very reasonable price of $170 for the router, PCI adapter, and PC Card.

Upshot: The D-Link wireless kit is a well-performing, moderately priced solution for going wireless, although the setup process could be a little confusing for new users.

    Duration of ownership: 7 Months

Strengths: works great going from MAIN computer 'router sits on top my computer' to my son's downstairs computer using the adapter-DWL-G520-that's going through 2 rooms and a wood floor-about 50 feet-works great!

Weaknesses: Had to call their-D-Link's-support to set it up-the lady at D-Link knew her stuff and we were running in 20 minutes time counting testing time. I had never used wireless before-therefore I requested D-Link support-which was excellent for me.

Overall Evaluation: For 7 months usage 24 hours a day NO problems at all. At the store they advised I match DI-624 to DWL-G520,which I did with great results-no problems-our setup DID NOT require booster antennas either.

Strengths: Easy to set up. Easy to use.

Weaknesses: When a problem arose, phone support staff was less knowledgeable about computer networking than I was. Their sole purpose seemed to be to try to make me just go away.

Overall Evaluation: I got my DI-624 just over a year ago and it was great. It ran for nearly 12 months without a hitch. Then I heard about a security hole that required a firmware update to patch. I applied the latest firmware from the website (2.76), and the router began rebooting itself more than a dozen times a day. I emailed for support. They told me to call in. I called in. Over the course of several calls, I was told to do everything from reapplying the firmware update (several times) to changing practically every setting in the router, all to no avail. After a month of this, I was finally "escalated" and issued an RMA. The replacement router arrived and guess what? It also reboots on its' own several times a day. Even though my D-Link is still under warranty for at least another year, I've given up and just bought another brand.
