Canon PowerShot S400 Digital Camera (Canon-8392A001)

Performance
Overall rating78
Image quality: To gauge picture quality, we take a series of shots, with and without flash, at 640 by 480 resolution and at the camera's highest resolution. We photograph a complex still life and a mannequin to see how well each camera captures details and subtle colorings such as skin tones. A panel of judges reviews the on-screen and printed photos and assigns image-quality scores; we then average those scores.Very good

User Reviews for Canon PowerShot S400 Digital Camera (Canon-8392A001)

    Duration of ownership: 4 Years

Strengths: Small size means it's in my pocket. Great close ups as well as the 12x telephoto.

Weaknesses: In my pocket sweat condenses in the camera. Switching to a case on my belt solved that problem. The flash can be too strong for indoor shots. The close ups can be slow as the data are transferred to the memory card.

Overall Evaluation: As a small form factor the camera is available whereas the more technologically proficient is still sitting at home. Viewing in bright sunlight is hopeless but the view finder saves the day. Sometimes there is a delay of 10 second upon pressing the shutter; never have been able to figure out why. I'd buy it again. Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Versatile, lightweight, cheap CF memory, rechargeable battery, Movie mode w/sound, easy operation.

Weaknesses: Short battery life (buy an extra), crappy little plastic USB connection cover

Overall Evaluation: This is my first digital camera experience & I went with Canon for name brand and the positive reviews I read. Overall it has been a good camera even though I had to take it in for repairs twice. The first time the switch to change from shooting to review mode broke off. The second time the image processor went and all my daylight pictures were washed out. This happened on vacation which was quite annoying. To Canon's credit they repaired it at no cost (other than the cost FedEx'ing to them), even though the warrtyyt expired a month earlier.
