Canon MultiPass MP730
MultiPASS MP730 Review, by Roy Santos May 1, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: Canon's multitalented MultiPass MP730 did consistently well in our tests. It was the fastest printer of the six ink jet-based devices we tested, and its print quality was among the best. The MP730 reproduced our high-resolution color photo with rich tones. It also turned in the fastest photocopying times in this roundup, beating even the speedy HP LaserJet 3330mfp.
The MP730 has enough extras to delight buyers who want everything. Its built-in fax lets you send documents via an easy-to-use control panel. Unlike some other MFPs we reviewed, the MP730 doesn't include a separate application for PC faxing, but it does let you use applications such as Microsoft Word to do faxing.
Slots are included for CompactFlash, Multimedia Card, Secure Digital, and Memory Stick memory cards. In addition, the MP730 is the only color MFP in our roundup to offer both flatbed scans and a sheet feeder, so you can use the sheet feeder to copy multipage documents, and use the scan bed for copying book and magazine pages.
WHAT'S NOT: This was the most expensive ink jet MFP in our June 2003 roundup, by $100. Its advantages in speed, image quality, and range of features don't justify such a big price premium.
WHAT ELSE: The MFP's software interface is a one-strip window in which several large icons represent major functions (much as with the HP PSC 2210). This helps you access print, scan, and copy functions without having to search through a complicated menu.
For OCR tasks, Canon includes Omnipage SE, a version of ScanSoft's Omnipage Pro OCR application. Omnipage SE lacks some of the advanced features found in such OCR software as Abbyy FineReader (which is included with the Dell A940, the Lexmark X5150, and the Lexmark PrinTrio X75), but its recognition accuracy is respectable.
UPSHOT: The MP730's performance and image quality are a cut above what we saw from other MFPs, but the price is pretty steep.

Strengths: Everything works great, even perfectly, but...
Weaknesses: Not compatible with Mac
Overall: I've had this printer for quite some time now and I've been loving it. Problem is I just bought a Mac and I just found out that the printer does not support Mac OS X at all... I'm just real bummed. I'm trying to find a printer that would be as good AND would support Mac OS but it seems that such a printer doesn't exist. Real bummer.

Strengths: versatility, very good with reports, figures, and photos
Weaknesses: Can't use 11" x 17" paper. Needs special canon paper for good glossy photos.
Overall: A very good printer for the money. I use it for my home office and printing photographs. No problems with the operation for the last 8 months. Good tech support when I had problems in the beginning. The only drawback is that it can't handle 11" x 17" paper, but since I only use this format occasionally the printer has met and exceeded my needs and expectations.

Strengths: Easy to setup and use out of box (with your USB cable), quiet and fast.
Weaknesses: Quality scanning seems a little slow but still acceptable.
Overall: We've put our MP730 through it's paces in a short time - printing, fax, copying and scanning. It's a smooth running machine. We like the front access to everything, including the Compact Flash/Smart card reader. Really like the CF index. This is my first Fax setup that worked first time. The MP730 uses the same lower cost individual ink tanks (BCI-3e) as my Canon 3000. Highly recommend for home and small office use. MP730 selling price varies wildly - We paid way too much from Amazon - should have checked with pricegrabber first.

Strengths: Extremely easy to connect to WinXP. The best photo quality I have seen. Quite. Very easy to use.
Weaknesses: Maybe the fax features, but for my needs they are great.
Overall: I am always a little apprehensive when I get something new that needs to be connected. The Canon Multipass MP730 was a breeze. I was able to make all the functions work in a very short time and downloading to my PC was easy. I highly recommend especially if you are like me and need space on your desktop. It's great having everything all in one. I love it.
