Konica Minolta DiMAGE F300 Digital Camera (MINOLTA-QMS-2785X001)
| Overall rating | 80 |
| Image quality: To gauge picture quality, we take a series of shots, with and without flash, at 640 by 480 resolution and at the camera's highest resolution. We photograph a complex still life and a mannequin to see how well each camera captures details and subtle colorings such as skin tones. A panel of judges reviews the on-screen and printed photos and assigns image-quality scores; we then average those scores. | Very good |

DiMAGE F300 Digital Camera (MINOLTA-QMS-2785X001) Review, by Richard Baguley June 2, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: The DiMage F300 combines stylish good looks and a great set of features. Its tough aluminum case holds a 3X optical zoom lens and a 5-megapixel sensor, and the camera is svelte enough to fit easily into a pocket. At 7.8 ounces (including battery and memory card), it is one of the lightest models we've seen.
In our tests, a CR-V3 lithium disposable battery lasted for almost 500 shots and a little under 3 hours of use-about half an hour longer than average, and more than enough for most trips. But if the battery does run out the F300 can also use two standard AA batteries.
We rated the image quality of its indoor and its outdoor shots highly: Both were well exposed with accurate color and plenty of detail, although pictures taken with the flash were washed out, with subtle colors (such as skin tones) getting lost.
The F300 takes a slightly different approach to scene modes than other cameras do. In addition to macro, portrait, sports, landscape-portrait, landscape, and night-portrait modes, the camera offers an automatic mode that chooses the appropriate scene mode based on the subject and the setting. This worked reasonably well, adjusting to shooting situations such as going from bright daylight to indoors.
WHAT'S NOT: The camera has plenty of buttons, but it isn't always clear which button controls what. For instance, the scene-mode button is marked with a macro symbol. The camera's 1.5-inch LCD is adequately bright, but it's smaller than those on many other cameras we've tested; most offer a 1.8-inch LCD.
WHAT ELSE: The beeping noises the camera makes when you press the control buttons are a little odd--they sound like something you might hear on a child's toy.
Fortunately, you can turn them off selectively; that is, you can turn off the sound the camera makes when you're navigating the menus but leave the shutter button sound on. What's more, this is the only camera we've seen that allows you to record your own shutter sound. So if you want to hear your dog bark every time you take a picture, this is the camera for you. The F300 comes with a 32MB Secure Digital memory card.
UPSHOT: The DiMage F300 provides a good combination of point-and-shoot simplicity and strong image quality for people who don't want to worry about the technical details of taking pictures.

Strengths: Size, batteries, features, construction, looks, price, memory
Weaknesses: A little slow on the shutter lag in certain modes, full manual mode chews up batteries fairly quick
Overall: This is my first digital camera but I have enjoyed photography for several years. I am not a professional, but am an above-average shooter and love technology. I searched for nine months for the perfect digital camera for me and there were a few models that really got my attention. However, the Dimage F300 (DF3) fit the bill perfectly. After six months of usage and countless pictures in every possible mode I have yet to be disappointed. The quality of the pictures is outstanding, the features are easy to use, and the camera is small enough to fit in the supplied Minolta belt pouch. SD memory is getting very inexpensive, so pick up a 256MB card with this camera. The DF3 is built very ruggedly. The lense operates smoothly and all the input buttons are easily used providing good tactile feedback. The mode selector dial works very well and I have never once had a problem with it accidentally switching on in my pocket as many reviews of the F100 have proclaimed. AA batteries are a treat in a camera this small as there are many manufacturers selling 2200 mAH and higher four packs with a charger in the $50 range. I have only been using the supplied 1400 mAH batteries and have not yet needed anything with greater capacity. Perhaps if I go on a long trip I may think differently about that. ;-) Enjoy the shooting!

Strengths: ease of operation and accesible menues, one touch operation when adjusting pic for lighting and other adjustments.Has many features not found on other camera of greater price. DO READ THE MANUAL
Weaknesses: uses up batteries very quickly when taking flash takes time to load in large format,on small memory cards not good to mix movie and stills.lens a little weak, pictures need to be sharpend before print
Overall: I am an advanced photographer (not professional) and specialize in landscape photography. This camera outperforms all but the 8+ mps on the market for pic quality and ease of use. The many features of this camera and its size make it one of the best that I have ever used. The menus are very easy to access. The Auto mode will allow the point and shooter to get fantastic pics the first time. The manual mode and its features allow the more advanced complete control over the camera to get thoes special shots. I have gotten excellent prints up to 17x20.I have 2 pictures in the library of congress that where taken with this camera. For the price this camera is real hard to beat. But the lens of the camera is a little weak and most pics have to be sharpend with a good picture processing program..I use microsofts digital suite 9 but I am not the average photographer..for most the picture quality is excelent
