KDS Rad-9p LCD Monitor (KDS-RAD9P)

Bottom Line
We can't argue with this monitor's price, but you can get better quality without paying more.

Rad-9p LCD Monitor (KDS-RAD9P) Review, by Seán Captain June 26, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: The KDS Rad-9p was among the lowest-priced 19-inch LCD monitors we considered in our August 2003 comparison, costing about as much as a high-end 17-inch LCD. Despite the low price, it does come with some frills, most notably a base sporting a set of largish speakers that had more oomph than those we find on most monitors.
WHAT'S NOT: The Rad-9p posted some of the lowest scores in our image-quality tests, showing dull colors on our graphics screens and a grayish cast that hinders the readability of text screens. (However, its text quality is still as good as or better than you'll find on most CRT monitors.) But you don't have to give up image quality in exchange for a low price: For example, we were pleased with the screens we saw on Cornea Systems' CT1904, also reviewed in August 2003 and priced competitively with the Rad-9p.
We were also disappointed with the monitor's ergonomic adjustability. The panel does tilt, but to a lesser extent than most other LCDs; it doesn't swivel, nor is its height adjustable.
KDS's three-year warranty does not apply to the backlight, which is covered for only one year. Most vendors cover this important component for three years.
WHAT ELSE: The basic on-screen controls require the user to click repeatedly through a circle of icons to reach the desired menu option, a tedious task. However, buttons on the bezel let you raise or lower the brightness levels with one touch. The included paper manual is not very detailed, and it suffers from some awkward translations.
UPSHOT: We can't argue with this monitor's price, but you can get better quality without paying more.
