Kodak EasyShare DX6340 Digital Camera (Kodak-1559103)
| Overall rating | 81 |
| Image quality: To gauge picture quality, we take a series of shots, with and without flash, at 640 by 480 resolution and at the camera's highest resolution. We photograph a complex still life and a mannequin to see how well each camera captures details and subtle colorings such as skin tones. A panel of judges reviews the on-screen and printed photos and assigns image-quality scores; we then average those scores. | Good |

Kodak EasyShare DX6340
EasyShare DX6340 Digital Camera (Kodak-1559103) Review, by Tracey Capen June 30, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: The EasyShare DX6340 costs $330--a great price for a digital camera with a 4X optical zoom lens. Kodak made this point-and-shoot model easy to use by keeping its features relatively simple. A large dial on the back of the DX6340 lets you quickly select one of the camera's five scene modes or its movie mode (which includes sound). And the unit has dedicated buttons for changing the flash setting, turning on the self-timer, and deleting less-than-satisfactory shots, so you don't have to stop and dig through menus to handle those fundamental tasks. A bright-red Share button lets you tag your favorite shots and immediately print or e-mail them the next time you connect to your PC.
The camera has a miniature joystick for navigating the short and simple list of menu options. The well-labeled menus display in large-font text, making them easy to read.
Add Kodak's $200 EasyShare Printer Dock 6000, and this camera will be a hit at parties. Just 3 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 13 inches deep with its removable paper tray attached, the 6000 is an easy-to-carry thermal dye transfer printer with a docking port on top. Place the camera on top of the printer, press a button, and out come nice-looking 4-by-6-inch color prints. You can connect the printer to your PC via a USB port, or you can run slide shows by connecting it to your TV. A pack of paper and ink for 40 photos costs $25. Printing is fairly slow, compared with a common ink jet--the paper makes four passes through the printer before the photo is done. Kodak also offers a nonprinting camera dock for $80 that includes a rechargeable battery for the DX6340.
WHAT'S NOT: We have only minor complaints. As with nearly all digital cameras, you can use the LCD to frame shots. But it's turned off by default--you have to go into the menus and turn it on to use it, a seemingly unnecessary step, and one that may confuse novice camera users. (Fortunately, this step is not necessary for playback or when you switch to the Macro scene mode.) Once turned on, you can use the joystick to switch LCD viewing off and on. The exposure value control is buried in the menus; because it's the easiest way to compensate for exposure problems, many cameras put this important control on the navigation buttons.
WHAT ELSE: Aperture-priority and shutter-priority exposure controls are the only advanced controls the DX6340 offers. They're easy to work. In our lab tests, the DX6340 produced images of average quality for a 3-megapixel camera. Its shots had accurate exposures and nicely reproduced colors, but some of the subtle shadings of red were lost in one of our test photos. Our prints looked well detailed, mostly, though our highly cropped test shot was not as sharp as prints from the Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom and the Nikon Coolpix 3100 we tested at the same time.
Along with a Secure Digital media slot, the DX6340 has 16MB of internal RAM, which ensures that the camera won't be useless if you forget to take along a memory card (which we've done on more occasions than we care to admit). Kodak does not include any SD media with unit, however.
Designed primarily for snapshooters, the DX6340 has few of the advanced features that experienced photographers might look for, such as auto-bracketing, adjustable flash power, or panorama mode (or a multiple-shot exposure lock to go with it). The camera does have spot metering, however. This Kodak is relatively slow to boot up after it's been powered off--it takes about 7 seconds before you can take a shot. It can also be a bit slow locking its exposure and focus, but once that's set, the trigger is fairly fast.
Kodak ships its EasyShare software with the DX6340. It's an easy-to-use application that has all of the common tools found in most digital imaging utilities: simple photo fixing, image organizing, and archiving, plus output options that include e-mail and online print ordering.
UPSHOT: A well-designed, simple camera that has everything you need for point-and-shoot photography. Its docking capabilities are an especially nice option for family photos.

Strengths: Nice pictures when camera worked.
Weaknesses: Poor camera quality and no customer service.
Overall: Camera was less than two years old therefore the one year warranty had expired. Paid $250 for camera alone and want $105 to repair which will then come with a 30 day warranty. The camera will not power up, worked one day and not the next day. Customer service put me through hoops purchasing several different types of batteries. Company offered to provide a remanufactured camera for $199, this camera retails for $235 new. Do not buy a Kodak camera!!! They are meant as disposable cameras not built to last.

Strengths: Simple to use. Takes great pictures. Battery lasted a long time. I love this camera!! It was exactly what I was looking for! Simple and it works great and great pics!!
Weaknesses: Weaknesses were actually mine, when I forgot to bring extra battery with me on vacation. Does not come with bag and other accessories
Overall: I love this digital camera!! It is so simple.Just point and click and you are able to take lots and lots of pictures, which is what I wanted . . . till you bump into the rare (for me) beautiful picture! and then later buy and keep only pics you love!! I just got back from Puerto Rico and I took picture after picture and got nearly all that I wanted. MY one problem was that because the battery lasted so long, I neglected to bring one with me. . . oops, so I did miss a few Kodak moments till we could get to the store to get a new battery (missed the iguana pic and a pic of the gecko :( ). To wrap up if you want a camera that is simple and wonder ful . . . Buy this camera!

Strengths: The Lens. This is the reason that I bought this camera after researching numerous others in this price range. The ease of use is great. The menu is very simple to follow. Great camera
Weaknesses: Although the battery door does feel flimsy, I have a two year old Kodak 1.3 meg and that door has never broken. I think the plastic is stronger than it feels.Software is poor.
Overall: I love this camera. The zoom works flawlessly and the pix, manual or auto are great. Best in price range. I have used Kodak service on prior camera w/o any problem. One year guarantee was a selling point. The display is clear and bright even outdoors. Flash is strong but throttles down for fill. I dont use the software. Had too many problems. Use a card reader and several other viewers.

Strengths: First, the fact that most of the modes aren't hidden in menus. Kodak included a diopter with this model. Lots of features for the price. Placement of dials, etc. Lenses are available, great optics.
Weaknesses: No hot shoe for an external flash, although one can get lenses. I don't think this camera saves one's settings after powering off. No light for movie mode.
Overall: First, the batteries are easy to find. In a pinch you could use an akaline AA, but it would not last long. I have a different model and the batteries lasted a long time. Secondly, the camera is great in low light!Bought a NimH charger with batteries (about $17), and a package of non-rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries at Sam's Club. The camera includes a non-rechargeable and a rechargeable battery. Next, the LCD is a nice viewable size, and seems to be clear in all types of lighting. I chose this camera for a friend of mine. He is not photo-savy at all. Simplicity was foremost, and of course, he wants a camera that will produce quality pictures. The 4X optical zoom is excellent for this price point. I believe the camera has a power-saving mode. I already own the DX4530 and this camera actually has more creative modes! The camera was purchased at Sam's Club with the printer dock (my friend does not own a pc), for $250! I explained to him that he could also take the digital "film" to a local store for processing. I shopped around for quite some time before purchasing both cameras. Kodak has answered my e-mails immediately, and they also have a toll-free number. In my opinion and experience with Kodak, this company seems to appreciate their customer's inputs for new features and other ideas. For example, my 4530 included a dock, but no printer. A printer was on sale at Walmart; however, I was advised by one of Kodak's customer service reps not to buy a printer dock yet because they will be manufacturing a universal printer for all of their camera lines. (I already own a HP all-in-one, and an old HP 895.)Great camera, I think I'll buy the new DX7440! Easy to use, decent prints, great customer service (register warranty on-line and get an additional month free), and fun to use!
