Dell Latitude D600
Latitude D600 Notebook Computer (Dell-D600CNET) Review, by Carla Thornton June 30, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: Dell's midline business notebook with a moonlight-silver case is pleasingly slim, well equipped, and, at 5.5 pounds (not including the power adapter), relatively light. For security, it has a Smart Card reader above the notebook's PC Card slot, and its dual pointing devices accommodate both the touchpad and the eraserhead camps of portable users. If you intend to make frequent use of its multipurpose bay (swapping an optical drive, second battery, or second hard drive), you'll be pleased with the Latitude's new spring-loaded tab release built into each multipurpose-bay device. You no longer need to turn the notebook over and fumble with a small, often sticky release latch every time you swap out a device. Also invaluable: the battery pack's external gauge, which lets you check battery life without turning on the notebook.
WHAT'S NOT: The D600 we saw had both memory slots filled (each with a 256MB DIMM). To upgrade later, you would have to discard one module. (A single 512MB DIMM costs an extra $80.)
WHAT ELSE: Like many other notebooks with the new Pentium M processor, you can buy the D600 with the Intel Pro/Wireless 802.11b Mini-PCI card (an Intel Centrino configuration), or opt for a non-Intel wireless card. According to Intel, the full-Monty Centrino is optimized to better balance battery life and performance. Although some Pentium M-equipped notebooks we've seen have lasted 5 or 6 hours on one battery charge (a Toshiba Tecra S1, for example), our review machine did not; still, its run time of 3.5 hours is better than that of most notebooks we've tested. There is an advantage to choosing a Dell wireless adapter: While Intel's adapter provides 802.11b Wi-Fi, Dell's TrueMobile wireless cards equip you with multiple standards.
The speed of our 1.6-GHz review unit was close to that of other 1.6-GHz Pentium M-equipped notebooks we've tested. The D600's PC WorldBench 4 score of 122 was only three points behind Toshiba's Tecra S1 and two points shy of the IBM ThinkPad T40.
Leaning more toward legacy than leading edge, the D600's ports include parallel, serial, and gigabit networking, plus a docking connection on the bottom. If you want FireWire, you'll have to purchase a D800 model.
The keyboard is a bit springy but well laid out. The touchpad and eraserhead each responded smoothly, as did their mouse buttons. The volume controls above the keyboard work smoothly. The D600's print documentation is thorough and includes a four-color setup poster, but the machine has no on-screen manual.
UPSHOT: A solid choice for the conservative business set, the Latitude D600 is fast, modestly priced, and offers a no-nonsense, security-conscious design.

Strengths: None
Weaknesses: Huge indentation and noticeable scratches on the exterior of the laptop.
Overall: I just received a laptop ordered from PCSystems. The laptop was damaged. It had scratches and an indentation on its exterior. The CD/DVD panel was exposed. I called the phone number listed on the invoice. The customer service were rude and quite inadequate. He told me what do I expect from a used laptop. I was told after a demanded my money back that their had a 20% restocking fee. To say the least, I am disappointed with the laptop.

Strengths: doubles as paper weight
Weaknesses: Five hard drives in 1.5 yrs. Screen replaced twice, keyboard once
Overall: you might think i beat this thing up, but i barely even travel with it. the worst computer i've ever owned. everyone i know who owns a dell has problems. not sure how it is possible this computer gets a good rating. dell has completely fallen off with regard to quality. i would say never buy a dell, especially this one.

Strengths: The system is solid and stable. The separate volume buttons provide easy access. Battery life is pretty good in my opinion to go to a clients or to a meeting.
Weaknesses: The case should have more metal in it and maybe some rubber or other tacky service that would make it easier to grip. The keyboard feels springy, good for quick hands.
Overall: I purchased the additional modular battery for long days. My computer will last over 6 hours and up to 7.5 with both batteries in the computer. Dell has outstanding technical support that covers everything except fire and theft. They answer their phones in under 5 minutes and they are knowledgeable. I recommend getting the Gold Tech, or Premier, or Gold support to get all the features that Dell is really known for. I looked at other competitors on the basis of technical support and warranty, Dell had the best one available. There are other notebooks out there that are great performers too, but if you're traveling and concerned about the bumps and bruises your $1600-2500 investment will be taking, I recommend Dell's warranty and support.

Strengths: Decent battery life
Weaknesses: Flimsy and slick case makes it difficult to grasp, forced low performance when on battery
Overall: Its okay. Plastic case is a bit flimsy and very slippery. Very concerned about dropping it - especially during air travel through security lines. While its faster than the ibm t23 I used to have I miss the magnesium sturdy case and the keyboard light of the t23. Would have liked my company to continue with IBM with their newer models.Am forced to lower performance when on battery. Can get cpu speed up using speedstep but graphics card doesnt speed up so games performance is poor when on battery. Hey, I want to play games on a plane.
