HP Pavilion Ze5300
Pavilion ze5300 Review, by Carla Thornton July 29, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: With the Pavilion Ze5300's FireWire port and rewritable DVD recorder, you can download video from a digital camcorder and burn your own action-packed movies. You can also send images to a TV via the S-Video-out port. Three USB 2.0 ports should be plenty for the rest of your new peripherals, and you can attach older ones to the parallel port and PS/2 (keyboard and mouse) ports. The Ze5300 even provides a fixed floppy drive for traditionalists.
WHAT'S NOT: Battery life is short, measuring only 1.7 hours in our tests, and the notebook is rather hefty at 2 inches tall and 8.2 pounds (not including its power adapter). The keyboard feels a tad shallow and wobbly, and the stereo speakers distort sound at their highest volume setting.
The documentation was somewhat disappointing. The print Getting Started booklet is helpful overall, but the photo illustrations in the reference manual and on the CD-ROM don't always match the text; some of the index page numbers are incorrect, as well.
WHAT ELSE: The case, dark-gray and silver, is user friendly. You'll have no trouble accessing the hard drive, which you can pull out the front of the case after you remove three safety screws. A multitude of shortcut buttons provide convenience; one on the front lets you switch off the built-in 802.11b wireless system to save battery life, and five programmable quick-launch buttons above the keyboard save time. A touchpad lock--a popular feature on HP portables--disables the cursor for hassle-free typing.
Though we haven't tested any identically configured notebooks with which we can compare it, the Ze5300 is not a stellar performer, given its hardware. Achieving a PC WorldBench 4 score of 108, the 2.8-GHz Pentium 4-equipped Ze5300 landed behind a similarly configured Amax Elite 6033D that posted a score of 115. Both of these notebooks used desktop CPUs, but the Ze5300's score was more comparable to the average score of 109 that we recorded for systems running 2.4-GHz Pentium 4-M processors.
The Ze5300 has a docking station port on the bottom for attaching to HP's $150 F4811B port replicator, which provides a gaggle of connections, including USB 2.0, serial, parallel, VGA, S-Video, and PS/2 ports, plus an ethernet LAN pass-through port.
UPSHOT: The use of a desktop processor keeps costs down, allowing HP to fit in high-end features such as a DVD burner and a 15-inch screen for under $2000. The trade-off, however, is slightly lower performance and scant battery life.

Strengths: Good looking, fast, great keyboard, DVD/CD-RW drive, screen, speakers, Windows XP Home.
Weaknesses: Graphics shares system memory, need at least 512mb RAM for best performance.
Overall: I have the ze4400, which is a step down the ladder but is basically the same. I love my computer and it is very fast, has a big hard drive and looks great. I hate that the graphics are shared with the computers memory. HP should have used the ATI 7500 instead of the 7000. This computer has excellent software. The ease of Windows XP is amazing. I will definetly buy again. Thanks, HP!!!!!!!!
