Canon i9100
I9100 WIDE FORMAT PRINTER 4800X1200DPI (Canon-8535A001) Review, by Dan Littman August 1, 2003

WHAT'S HOT: If you plan to print lots of photos, you'll appreciate how the i9100 churns out high-resolution pics on glossy paper at 1.5 ppm--more than twice the average on the Top 5 chart. Its color photos show bright, accurate colors, and both color and gray-scale images exhibit sharp detail and smooth textures. Serious photographers will love the printer's wide carriage, which can handle paper up to 13 inches wide by 19 inches long. The i9100 also prints text fairly quickly, at 3.9 ppm (though another recent Canon, the Photo i850, produced text at more than twice that speed). Canon provides a helpful setup poster; a thorough printed manual; and a long, detailed HTML manual full of great tips and troubleshooting suggestions.
WHAT'S NOT: The i9100's price tag may be fair for a printer that can handle oversize paper, but $500 is still a formidable cost for most nonprofessionals. Also, the printer sometimes makes a racket when idle.
WHAT ELSE: Though the text quality on plain paper suffers from a somewhat grayish look and rough edges, it is good enough for the occasional letter or spreadsheet. (If you use coated ink-jet paper, text quality compares well to any printer.)
The paper supports on many other Canon ink jets hang loosely and fall off when you move them, but Canon has rectified that problem on the i9100: The output tray is a hinged part of the printer itself, and the input support settles snugly into deep notches. However, when the trays are open for 13-by-19-inch paper, you'll need desk space at least 22 inches by 31 inches to accommodate the printer.
UPSHOT: Graphic designers, service bureaus, and people in love with digital photography will find the i9100 a good match for their needs.

Strengths: Installed as advertised. Dynamite results.
Weaknesses: None found yet
Overall: They even furnished a giant installation step-by-step sheet on how to install the printer. AS they went along, they would say "if this doesn't work, try this " I never had to do anything else. The printing softwre is easy to use, and it works as advertised. They funish extra black cartridges. Bought it from Digital Foto, who got it here in a week in great condition.

Strengths: REMARKABLE PRINTS
Weaknesses: NONE YET
Overall: So far this is the best printer purchase I have made. Yes, some may say the Canon i9100 is over priced but I am a firm believer in the idea that sometimes you have to pay more to get more. If you shop around you can save yourself quite a bundle. I saved $100 off MSRP. The Canon i9100 prints beautiful prints in an reasonable amount of time. Love the edge to edge and 13"X19" printing capabilities. NOTE: (To correct first reviewers poor review.) The speed is comparable to the Epson 2200 (closest competitor). Also, the unit is very simple to use, especially if you utilize the supplied software. (To correct the second review.) Lightfastness is up to 25 years if printed on the appropriate paper. Be smart and do your own research.

Strengths: Phenomenal prints!
Weaknesses: None, yet
Overall: I was really torn between the Canon i9100, the less expensive Epson Sylus 1280, and the HP9000 series. I owned an HP for many years with great satisfaction. A couple of things swayed me toward the Canon: I own a Canon G3, which produces incredibly accurate photos. I believed their printers would produce the same, especially if coupled with another Canon product. I liked the option of the 13 X 19 prints. I would like to mount some of those in my home. That size would be perfect for our walls. I received the printer yesterday and was blown away by the print quality. Yeah, I paid more for this printer, but am happy with the quality and ease of use.

Strengths: Great Prints! Outstanding ease of use. This is the photo printer is you are serious about getting the best prints.
Weaknesses: Cost
Overall: Great photo printer. It is the best on the market at the moment (IMHO). I have taken some great shots with my Digital Rebel 300D 6.34 megapixel camera. Printing 13*19 looks better than what a photo lab could do. I have mounted three 13*19's in different rooms of the house (two color and one black and white) and get comments such as, "who did these for you". The borderless printing is senstational. I don't understand the comments from one reviewer here. He states he would rather have his Epson. It's quite obvious that he knows nothing about this printer and does not even own one. Check it out at a store, you will be amazed. Mike

Strengths: Super Fast, Beautiful Photo prints
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall: This printer is fast. A 4x6 print in about 35 seconds. A 13x19 print in about 5 minutes. I don't know why the first reviewer claimed this printer to be slow. The second reviewer said lightfastness about 2-3 years. He's only had the printer for a few months and every professional review I've read so far, has said lightfastness is up to 25 YEARS!
