Canon USA Powershot A70 Digital Camera Review
by Tracey Capen
Canon's 3.2-megapixel digital camera has a near-perfect blend of image quality, features, flexibility, and price.

WHAT'S HOT: The Canon PowerShot A70 straddles the line between point-and-shoot and advanced camera, at an astounding estimated street price of only $300. Its small size and light weight are typical of point-and-shoot cameras, and it offers six scene modes to help casual photographers get better shots. It also has an extensive set of creative controls--such as aperture- and shutter-priority modes, a full manual exposure setting, and (very rare on cameras in this price range) optional adapter lenses--that will appeal to advanced shooters. A plastic ring around the camera's lens rotates off, exposing a bayonet mount for a wide-angle, telephoto, or close-up lens. Unfortunately, the accessory lenses are pricey, ranging from $99 to $129, and you'll need a $20 adapter to use them.
The A70's image quality scores were second only to those of the Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom among the 3-megapixel cameras we've reviewed to date. Our sample photos showed accurate exposure, pleasing colors, and fairly fine detail. Blue sky in our sunny cityscape shot looked slightly weak, but the A70 nicely reproduced fine white clouds.
WHAT'S NOT: A couple of quibbles: First, the A70's menus are divided into two sets--one for basic shooting settings, such as exposure value and resolution, and the other for everything else. You have to remember which set of menus cover a particular task. Once you learn the arrangement, however, you can make changes fairly quickly. Second, the automatic power-off options are rudimentary: You can't change the amount of time the camera waits before it automatically shuts itself down.
WHAT ELSE: The A70's boxy shape and enlarged battery compartment give you a solid grip on the camera. The controls are sensibly positioned and, for the most part, adequately labeled. Advanced elements, in addition to those mentioned earlier, include a panorama mode, manual focus, white-balance calibration, and a feature that lets you attach audio notes to still images.
The better-than-average software bundle includes Canon's adequate photo utility for downloading and managing images, and ArcSoft Camera Suite 1.2 (a competent package for editing your still shots and movies). You also get thorough, nicely designed ,and easy-to-read documentation.
UPSHOT: A bargain-priced camera that tries to do it all--and mostly succeeds. It's ideal for situations where flexibility is more important than high resolution.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Lots of manual controls, decent optical zoom for a relatively low price. Uses standard AA batteries and not custom battery pack.
Weaknesses: Shooting under bright environments can produce dull photos. Construction is a bit flimsy.
Overall Evaluation: Overall a great camera. It's very easy to use in general and photo resolution is excellent. A standard AA battery scheme is also great because if your battery ever fails you won't have to go directly to the manufacturer and pay for an expensive replacement pack. The dial and buttons quickly allows you to adjust shutter speed, flash. OSD menu also includes several languages not usually found on cameras like Japanese and Chinese, in addition to the standard French, Spanish etc.I wasn't particularly impressed by it's night time mode. I had to do manual adjustments and also have a steady hand to actually get a quality night time shot that is not blurry. If you're a point-and-shoot type of user, sometimes the camera will digitally reduce the color saturation of your photos. This means the vibrant colors you expect from a shot will become dull. I had to later edit some photos manually to make them look good on prints. Also my camera is ugly now because the small pieces of plastic that covers the lens when its not in use has fallen off after I carried it around during a trip. Not the most durable product.Overall the pros outweigh the cons.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Great Photo Quality, Cheap CF Memory used as compared to other types, pretty decent videos, USB connectivity, Good battry life.
Weaknesses: None as yet.
Overall Evaluation: This was one of the best in its times. Although A95 and others now match this one for price and you get higher MPs. But even then this A70 rocks.
