Strengths: I took a chance and purchased this printer because of the awards its won and excellent photo printing cababilities.

Weaknesses: Noise level. Problems associated with power usage. Seemingly buggy software.

Overall Evaluation: I have not given this printer 5 stars as I've not had it long enough to do so and because of some issues as noted below. I think it could be a 5 star in the right environment. I purchased this printer with a new scanner to replace my HP 2100 laser which had bitten the dust. I need the capability to copy photographs instead of continually running out to get actual reprints or color copies. I'd read that the Epson Perfections don't work with the Minolta so purchased a highly-recommended CanoScan 9900F. The two seem to work fine together.Understand that I need my printer close to me as I print on various media: bond, letterhead, envelopes, labels, photographs, and need to be able to insert them easily. Following are issues associated to this printer: WEIGHT: The UPS guy wanted help bringing the printer up the stairs and got it; however, though a petite light-weight, I was able to lift the printer from the box and place it on my desk. Canon recommends two people lift this printer.POWER USAGE:The power usage makes my BackUPS Pro click about every 30 seconds when the printer is awake. Additionally, I get a slight flicker in my ViewSonic screen when it prints. PAPER PORT ON SIDE: I turned the printer so that the paper port faces me with the wires sticking out the front. It's fine, but not pretty. PRINTER PANEL: The printer screen IS very difficult to see. You will have a natural tendency to look for a knob to turn it brighter. A flashlight might be handy after all. NOISE: After reading the reviews about the high amount of noise, I was hesitant to purchase this printer, but I know a lot of opinions are relative. With this printer 3 feet from me, the fan running can take some getting used to. When it powers down, it is silent and makes you want to make it power down sooner; however, it takes so long (compared to my HP 2100) to power back up, I also want to turn the power down option OFF. When the printer is running, I feel like I'm sitting next to a copier. Where I could formerly talk to/hear my boss slightly down the hall, I can't now. It is very difficult to hear while on the telephone and the printer is printing. SOFTWARE BUGGY? I'm always willing to give someone a chance and have contacted Minolta to ask about the fact that my printouts are buggy. When trying to print a check from QuickBooks, the printer took in the check 3 times, only to spit out a blank check. In other words, no printing. Then it took in the blank and then printed on a blank sheet of paper that was under the single check I put in. A small, basic Excel chart came out with a bunch of letters/numbers written on the top left. Nothing else. A four-page Excel with a bit of color on it never would print. (No problem for my old HP laser.) I finally cancelled the job. Pages off the web have printed fine. Other random pages have printed fine. It's just inconsistent and quite often spits out a blank sheet of paper before the print. BOTTOM LINE:I can deal with the light printer panel and the printer turned around; however, the printouts need to become reliable and hopefully Minolta will be able to help me with that soon. (The printer just powered down and sounds as if it was just turned off. Wonderful!) This printer may be excellent, but it is DEFINITELY NOT a personal printer/one to sit close to, anymore than you'd want to sit right next to the office copier. I would definitely recommend it to others on the condition that my bugs are fixed, and that the printer be placed away in an area away from workers. I am, however, seriously considering returning the printer because of the problems associated with its power usage and high noise level. We'll have to see if I can get used to them. Neither would be a problem if the printer wasn't right next to me. If I do decide to return it, I hope I can get someone to carry it back downstairs!

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: As a graphic designer, I am thrilled that images can be scanned at high resolution from a 2 x 3 (for example) to output as an 8 x 10 in one step! No recalculating image size in Photoshop!

Weaknesses: I wish it were a 17" long bed for legal documents.

Overall Evaluation: The Canoscan was easy to set up, easy to install and worked the first time. The negative trays are a nice bonus!Even though I wish it had a 17" bed, its size is compact and will do nicely for 8 x 10" documents. Canon has good products and will stand behind them for service and repair.
