Canon i475D Desktop Photo Printer
I475D DESKTOP PHOTO PRINTER 4800X1200DPI (Canon-8997A001) Review, by Dan Littman April 23, 2004
Canon's $100 i475D Desktop Photo Printer is one of the least-expensive printers you'll find that has flash-memory slots and a control panel so you can print your pics without a PC. The printer reads CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, SD, and MultiMediaCard memory cards; and connecting via the i475D's USB 2.0 port, you can display the photos on your PC's monitor.
Connecting a camera directly to a printer is not new, but until now both the camera and the printer had to be the same brand. The i475D incorporates the PictBridge standard, which allows any PictBridge-compatible camera to connect directly to the printer for instant prints. A number of companies other than Canon make cameras with PictBridge support, including Olympus, Nikon, Konica Minolta, Fuji Photofilm, and Hewlett-Packard.
At 5.3 pages per minute, this model printed text relatively quickly, about half a page faster than the average for all-purpose inkjets we tested. It printed text crisply, too, with little of the random spray or loss of small detail that many inkjets produce. The i475D also printed very impressive gray-scale photos on glossy paper, with smooth shading and good detail. Canon provides superb documentation, including separate paper manuals for printing with and without a PC; one of the manuals provides the table of contents for the extensive on-screen manual.
Though the i475D's control panel LCD lets you select which paper type to use and which images to print, the control panel is somewhat difficult to understand. It isn't always obvious which menu label matches up with which control button--when setting the number of copies to print, for example, or when jumping between paper types or when choosing borderless prints. The LCD identifies some settings as numerical codes, which you have to look up in the manual. Code 1, which signifies that the printer is ready to print a nozzle-check sheet, could easily have been spelled out in the LCD.
We've seen better photo prints from more expensive models, but for the most part we were pleased with the Canon's capabilities. Its four-ink technology created sharp images with smooth shading. On glossy paper, however, colors looked undersaturated, making our test subjects look slightly lifeless. Tweaking the driver's CMYK settings might yield better results.
Upshot: This is a good all-around printer for digital photographers on a tight budget who also print a lot of text and graphics.

Strengths: It's quick; it's quiet; it's compact; the quality is great. If you need a good printer at an Ab-Fab price, this is it.
Weaknesses: The software and documentation are first-rate.
Overall: The convenience of printing precisely which shots and the number i need is well worth the rather minimal cost of getting set up with a photo printer, especially considering the time that i don't spend fooling around with making reprints at the photo store. i recently took candids at a wedding and used this printer to make sets of prints especially for each set of friends without all the bother of getting the film developed, selecting the prints and quantities, then trekking to the shop for reprints.

Strengths: Text printed was clean and sharp
Weaknesses: Basic functional printer.
Overall: This photo printer is small-scale photo printer with some nice features for amateur digital printing. It is easy to install and print quickly - 5 pages per minutes. The photo quality is acceptable. It support printing directly from a digital camera though there is no viewing LCD in this printer.

Overall: I returned my HP7960 back cause of heavy vibration & noise during printing and I was waiting until good deal from somewhere. Finally I got a great chance from the Officemax the price was $29.99 after $50 rebate(I'm waiting now). The price was great.Vibration and noise is much much better than HP and speed is good.I'm totally satisfied with this and would recommend to buy @ low price as possible as you can

Strengths: Solid printer, compatible with memory cards, USB 2.0, good replacement ink prices...
Weaknesses: A bit slow... quality isn't always as pristine as you'd hope...
Overall: All said and done, this is a solid printer, and well worth the purchase, especially now that the prices are dropping and they're being cleared out. That being said, it is a bit slow at times and the photo quality prints aren't always crystal clear. I think this actually may have more to do with the paper that you use, rather than necessarily just the printer. Great printer, would definitely buy again.

Strengths: easy to set up, use usb2 connect and cheap
Weaknesses: not very good printing quality
Overall: This printer is very easy to set up, actually, for most of people, you do not need to read manual to do it. It uses usb2 connect which in my opinion is much more convienient than serial port. It comes with memory card reader so you can read your picture directly from printer even without a PC, also has a reasonable printing speed. but the quality of printing is not very good, but consider its low price, I think it is fair enough. so, I rate this one 4 out of 5, very good.
