iRiver iRiver iFP-195T MP3 Player (iRiver America-IFP195T) Review

by Alexandra Krasne

Flash-based player is a little expensive, but its voice recordings and music sound excellent.

This small flash-based player is shaped like a prism with rounded edges and has 512MB of storage (enough to hold about 130 average MP3 files at 4MB each). The IFP-195T also sports straightforward controls and has a built-in FM tuner and voice recorder. The bundled Sennheiser earpiece headphones sounded outstanding, even at high volumes. Voice recordings were intelligible but a bit crackly. Recorded and live FM radio sounded clear, however.

The device's blue backlit display is legible, and the four-way joystick button requires just a light tap to advance tracks, go to a higher directory, or scroll through menu items. IRiver bundles an armband, neck strap, and carrying case with the cigarette-lighter-size player. Despite the device's USB 1.1 connection, transfers were quick.

The IFP-195T requires only one AA battery (included), but the battery compartment's latch is flimsy and breaks easily; if the door breaks, you'll have to tape the compartment shut so the battery doesn't fall out. A new model, the IFP-390T, supplants the IFP-195T and fixes that problem. The new version also offers a line-in so you can record MP3s from another source (radio, stereo, or a microphone), and it records natively to MP3 rather than to .rec, which the player coverts to .wav.

Upshot: A small but full-featured player, the IRiver IFP-195T sounds great and is easy to operate.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Super small and lightweight. I love the fact that there is no recharging batteries - just pop in a new one when the old one dies.

    Weaknesses: None so far.

Overall Evaluation: I think this is a great mp3 player - perfect for working out as it is very small and lightweight. Comes with an arm band for use while walking/jogging. Very easy to use - the interface is easy to manuever and the software was easy to operate. I think this is a great find for someone looking for a great workout mp3 player. Battery life and song storage is very good as well.

Strengths: Sound quality, Size, Flash Memory

Weaknesses: Memory size maybe for some people but really perfect for me.

Overall Evaluation: I use this device to have the songs I most want to listen to right at hand. The player is really perfect for this. I code at 96 kbps in WMA format and I get about 110 tunes on the device. I have the blues, Jazz and rock tunes I want with me all the time and they all sound fantastic. I also use the output jack to a set of old Microsoft computer speakers and the sound is heavenly. I cannot say enough good things about this setup! I cannot see how you can go wrong with the iRiver iFP-195T 512MB MP3 Player!!!!
