Inkjets Print Photos Well, And Decent Looking Text, Too
Inkjet printers like this one are commonly used in a home or student setting as well as in a small office. Printing photos is their strongest suit, although they can also print decent to good-looking plain text. For the best results, you usually need to use specially coated papers.
Inkjet printers spray ink through microscopic nozzles arrayed on a print head. Because the printhead has to move back and forth across the page, inkjets can be slow--especially when printing those nice photos.
Ink type affects print quality. Dye-based inks (color dissolved in liquid) tend to create better-looking colors, but they’re less light- and water-resistant. Pigment-based inks (solid color particles suspended in liquid) create images that are more durable but not quite as colorful. Some inkjet printers use both: a pigment-based black for crisp text quality, for instance, but dye-based colors for better-looking graphics.
Ink cartridges come in two basic designs. The colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow) can come in a unified “tricolor” cartridge or in separate cartridges. There’s always a separate black. The tricolor cartridges are more compact, but they’re also wasteful because you have to replace the entire cartridge whenever you run out of any one color. Some printers offer additional colors, such as light cyan or light magenta, to widen the color palette.

Be Skeptical of Color Print Speed Claims
A printer's stated color print speed (expressed in pages per minute, or "ppm") should be taken with a grain of salt. Vendors often use contrived methods to arrive at such numbers. For instance, they might print in draft mode, which is faster than the default mode most people use. Or they'll exclude the first page out from a document's total print time, because its slower exit reflects the processing time needed to create the document image for the printer. Or they might send raw data straight to the printer, bypassing any application or PC processing time. The PC World Test Center uses dedicated testbed PCs and real-world applications to reflect actual use as closely as possible. We also time the document "from click to clunk" -- from the time we click the "Print" button to the time when the last page falls into the output tray.
Installed Memory is Ideal for Five or Fewer Users
This printer's installed memory is sufficient for small offices or workgroups that print typical business documents, such as memos, spreadsheets, or simple Web pages. If you have more than six people using the printer or the printer handles heavy traffic, you will want more memory than this printer provides.
USB Interface Connects Quickly and Easily to Your Computer
This printer uses USB (Universal Serial Bus) to connect to your computer. Connecting a printer via USB is very easy; just remember not to do it until the installation routine tells you to -- or risk having to start over.
The original USB version 1.1 was slow: 12 Mbps (megabits per second). USB 2.0's faster bandwidth of 480 Mbps is plenty for a standalone printer.

Strengths: USB port in the front for quick laptop hookup.
Weaknesses: Very large
Overall: I've not used it enough to give an intelligent review. I had no problems installing and it is working well so far with quick print projects.

Strengths: incredible resolution
Weaknesses: prints have a slight magenta cast
Overall: good printer but the price has already dropped significantly since i bought it. ink doesnt last long and is very expensive. such good resolution that it is very dificult to tell the difference from a homemade HP print and the "CVS" conventional analog picture (except for the magenta cast which can be compensated for in a photo enhansing program)

Strengths: Great photo prints, easy to setup, sharp & clear prints on any paper
Weaknesses: have to change to black print cartridge to do good text printing
Overall: Outstanding photo printer, both color and black & white prints using its 8 color ink printing. Would not use as a default printer for everything because of having to change to black cartridge for regular work printing. Speed isn't great but is very acceptable and it is reasonable quiet. All in all I am very happy with it.

Strengths: Picture quality is very good. Speed is acceptable however, I'm fussy so I mostly use the highest print quality settings and sacrafice speed.
Weaknesses: Paper feeds doubles with heavier # paper. Always use single sheet feeding w/photo paper to reduce misfeed costs.Foot print is rather large at ~21".Ink consumption >$'s/sh more than HP 722 & 810
Overall: Overall I'm pleased with the printer however only because of a couple features that my HP 722 did not have. 1) borderless printing 2) Higher DPI printingso print quality on larger prints is very good. It prints fairly quietly. Photo printing speed is only marginally better and the fast normal B/W printing setting is fast. The printer footprint is larger, just under 21". More mis-feeds / doubles with heavier # paper in the lower tray. Ink is consumed at a faster rate and three cartridges are required to print color versus only one in the HP 722. The red "low ink" light seems to be always flashing like a baby saying "feed me"! Almost 3x more costly for ink then the 722. Print. Haven't found a way to print black & white word documents without using up ink from color cartridges too?I don't use the camera card slots and associated printer viewing screen because I print on 8.5" x 11" paper which I place four pictures on per sheet for printing. If you use the 4" x 6" paper, I would see this feature as a plus but I don't print on 4x6 photo paper.

Strengths: Picture quality is great and I love the limited edit features on the printer.
Weaknesses: Pretty big and the on board memory card reader is WAY too slow!
Overall: I had ordered the Canon I900 printer online and when I went to pick it up I let the sales rep talk me into buying the HP 7960. I took my own memory card with me to the store and the HP actually printed a better picture. Once I got it home I saw the lines that everyone complains about. The sales rep says they will fade over time and are not an issue if you use high quality paper. Well, even with the best HP paper out there I still get very annoying lines the entire length of my pictures. Other than the lines I think it's a great printer, but this flaw has made me regret my purchase. I only use the on board memory card reader if I want to print a quick picture. The reader is way to slow to do anything else, like copy the file, etc. I use a regular reader plugged into a USB 2.0, and it's easily 10 times faster. I'm going to take this printer back and try the canon I900.
