The silver, gray, and black L1520B impressed us at first with its snazzy industrial design. But our opinion changed the closer we looked. For starters, it offers only the minimum in adjustability for an LCD: tilt. And it provides only an analog video input (though that will suffice for many users whose PCs don't have a digital output).

Text quality was pretty solid. (Indeed, this is rarely a problem for LCDs.) But it scored at the low end of the scale for graphics quality, compared to other 15-inch flat panels we've tested. In particular, we noticed shortcomings in our gray-scale test, which provides an indication of contrast, and for color quality on one of our photo tests.

But by far the biggest problem was the presence of two defective subpixels that stood out as bright dots of misplaced color on several of our test screens. This level of imperfection is within the allowable range for the TCO'99 certification that this monitor carries, but we are used to seeing monitors that have no defective pixels or subpixels.

On a brighter note, the monitor controls were quite nice. A single tap brings up brightness and contrast adjustments, and a separate menu adds advanced controls, including color temperature and gamma. The LightView feature lets you toggle through a number of brightness settings, including a user-defined level and presets for text, movie, and photo content--for both day and night conditions.

Upshot: LG has made a good start in the design of the L1520B, but it falters on the most important aspect of a monitor: screen quality.
