Samsung SyncMaster 173P
17IN LCD 1280X1024 700:1 .264MM 173P SILVER ULTRA NARROW BEZEL (Samsung-173PSILVER) Review, by Richard Jantz February 2, 2004
Samsung's stylish SyncMaster 173P should appeal not only to techno-fashion aficionados but to anyone who wants an LCD that delivers outstanding image quality. Thanks to its very sharp text and vivid, accurate colors, the 173P earned top scores for both text and graphics quality when we pitted it against a room full of competitors.
The silvery 173P's very flexible dual hinge allows a height adjustment of 3.25 inches. The screen can also tilt, swivel, and rotate from landscape to portrait mode. (Samsung uses Portrait Displays Pivot Pro software for screen-image rotation.) You can even fold the 173P flat against the base so it can serve as a wall mount bracket.
Unlike the other 17-inch LCDs we tested, the 173P has no front-panel controls other than a power button. This design, which Samsung dubs "hands free," shifts all image adjustments to the bundled MagicTune software, which controls the monitor from the PC via its VGA or DVI cable. When first installed, a setup wizard guides you through a series of initial adjustments--for brightness, contrast, and color--and the 173P remembers your settings each time you use it. You can also create and apply different sets of adjustments for specific tasks, such as text applications, graphics work, and games. Although we didn't have much difficulty using the 173P's software-based controls, some users may miss the standard front-panel buttons.
As is often the case with innovative designs, the SyncMaster 173P LCD isn't cheap. Its $630 price tag (at the time of our review) makes it nearly as expensive as some 19-inch LCDs.
Upshot: The swank SyncMaster 173P's outstanding image quality (and good looks) make it a fine choice for graphics and entertainment applications, if you can swing its premium price.

Strengths: Everything about the monitor is great.
Weaknesses: Who uses RGB anyways?
Overall: Everything about this lcd is what lcds should be. First of all, there was not one dead or stuck pixel, plus theres awsome customer service if that is needed. There is no noticeable ghosting at all in games as fast as UT2k3&4 or Doom3, and once calibrated, the colors are more than accurate enough for photoshopping or rendering. Playing wow with it now and colors are lifelike, vibrant and smooth. Everything from the extremely thin profile to the way the body folds down flat for hanging on the wall or even upside down, this monitor beats out any crt I have ever owned. I will definately be getting another for a dual monitor setup once i get a video card with two dvi outs. If you are willing to spend the money you cannot go wrong with this piece of samsung art.

Strengths: Design , Outstanding Color & Contrast , DVI , No Ghosting
Weaknesses: 25ms , Little dark in games ( Far Cry )
Overall: WOW , The best one that i see , Beautiful Design ( mine is Black ), Great Color & Contrast ( The black is realy black ) , No Ghosting , No Bad Pixel ...... Everything is graet ! Before 173p i had a 172x , the 172x is great for gamers ( 12ms ) but the color & contrast was not that i want !! also the 172x had ghostnig in edges & in angles was brighter ...... then i bought the 173p , know this is that i want , i love it !!! But if you a gamer , the 172x is better than 173p for you ! But if you Graphist , dont think more & buy the 173p , This LCD made for Professionals !

Strengths: Design, performance, dual-input, and design!
Weaknesses: No Mac software support. Tilt/pan adjustment could have allowed higher elevation, and more iMac-like ease...
Overall: Just wanted to clarify some points about this display's controls, mentioned in the previous posts. The elegantly designed monitor has only one physical button, which is touch- (or heat- ?) sensitive, and it controls three functions. Everything else, including brightness, is controlled via the included Windows-only software. * Touch the button once (1 beep): The most frequently used function -- turns the display power on or off. The AC/DC transformer, however, cannot be cut off, unlike some other Sony or Samsung monitors with an extra switch. ** Touch and hold the button until the second beep: The next most-used function -- switch between the analog and digital inputs. Yes, it does switch! *** Touch and hold the button until the third beep: A seldom used function -- activates the Auto Adjustment function of the display.Kenneth P. WongWISD

Strengths: Non Existent Ghosting, Good with FPS and DVD movies, looks great, flexible mounting, cabling for DVI and DB 15, Three year warranty.
Weaknesses: Price, Software Issues, no switching from one computer to another.
Overall: This is all I ever wanted in a screen with only a few exceptions. It's a good thing that samsung two separate inputs (DVI amd DB15), but the didnt put a toggle switch for two separate computers. A KVM switch with DVI capability must be expensive, if one exists yet. The software interface is great, however after using to provided programs, i had problems keeping the settings. Pivot program included is useless and unessesary, the ati card im using has a feature for it in the control panel. just as long as you are using a current ati control panel you wont need to install the pivot software. I paid about 599, for this screen it think its well worth it. It has feature not yet seen on other LCDs, and image quality is one of the best out there, if you have the cash, i suggest you try one out and make a post.

Strengths: Bright; silver cyber-look; digital auto-adjustment; heat-sense power switch (woo--! surprised when turned on the 1st time); 270 rotation Pivot (crazy!); opt. contrast @ 1280x1024 (CLEARER than CRT!).
Weaknesses: (spent 30 mins to think of some..) Not so sure rather it is a weaknesses: It has no switch except the power. Honestly, it automatically adjust the opt setting, no need manual switchs. :)
Overall: I spent months on researching (more like studying) on LCDs b4 I grab this 173P. Samsung is a big brand. They are not the best, but the most valueable! You get the most out of dollars you spent! (In my case, even more than what I expected!!)The real product looks WAY BETTER than in the picture! The back of the LCD is in pearl-white like the new I-MAC, the front and the foot-stand is real sivler. The LED is in blue. My desk was supposely facing the wall.. now i want it to face the door.. :)If you are thinking LCD cannot beat CRT.. nah, I am a webmaster play with colors a lot, and telling you this, "I will not go back to that big box" Good for your eyes! Save your space! Why not LCD?!I understand it is a little pricy for a 17", but it has DVI, 700:1 contrast, 270 brightness - it is even better than 191T!I got mine from bcd2000.com, great & quick! Not counting the holidays, from my click to order to the LCD sit at my door only took 4 days! 0 dead-pixels guarantee, nowhere else can do better!
