The Pocket PC V36 offers a respectable list of specs, but the most appealing number is its price: $299 at the time of our review. That amount gets you a 300-MHz XScale processor, a healthy 64MB of RAM, and Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 OS. Also included is an integrated camera that takes still pictures and videos at resolutions of up to 640 by 480 pixels. The camera provides an impressive array of options, among them the ability to adjust settings such as white balance and brightness. But the interface is difficult to navigate, and using the stylus to tap the tiny software-based shutter button is awkward. We would have preferred a simpler camera with a more easily navigable interface, as well as a dedicated button for quickly snapping pictures or starting video recordings. The V36 does, however, have a hard button for starting voice-memo recordings.

ViewSonic Pocket PC V36
PocketPC V36 (ViewSonic-PPCV36) Review, by Sean Captain December 24, 2003
If you're looking for wireless capabilities, the V36 is not your best choice. ViewSonic sells a $129 Wi-Fi card for the V36's SD/SDIO slot, but the added cost makes the total package more expensive than models such as the $379 Dell Axim X3i, whose integrated Wi-Fi is far more elegant than the card protruding from the top of the V36. However, if you don't think you need Wi-Fi, at least the card option gives you peace of mind in knowing that you can add it at a later date. As for the display, the V36's 320-by-240-pixel, transflective LCD is bright and easy to read, but the screen on the aforementioned Dell Axim X3i exceeds it in both brightness and color saturation.
The V36 includes Microsoft Pocket Office, which allows you to take Word documents or Excel spreadsheets on the road, as well as to play music and video files in Windows Media player. The device also comes with Microsoft Outlook 2002 and ActiveSync 3.7 for syncing data with your PC over the included USB cable. (A USB cradle costs an extra $30.)
Upshot: The V36 is a well-priced, basic Pocket PC. The integrated camera, though a bit clumsy, is still a fun extra.

Strengths: large screen, MP3, camera/video, fast
Weaknesses: poor pictures in low light, little to no accessories
Overall: I'm a former Palm owner and I would trade those in for this V36 ANY DAY! I love everything about it except as mentioned above.

Strengths: Good screen, durable, lightweight
Weaknesses: Battery life is not all that great.
Overall: This Pocket PC is reliable, lightweight, and fully functional. The only downside is that it doesn't have a compact flash card slot and there are not a whole lot of accessories by Viewsonic made for it.

Strengths: cheap
Weaknesses: The screen fails in the text entry area.
Overall: I have had this for 6 months. I am on my third one and I use it gently! Essentially, the screen fails in the block recognizer section. It registers a touch above where you actually placed the stylus. This makes it rather hard to choose menu items or even to accurately enter text with the stylus. I would not recommend it.

Strengths: Xscale Processor, Camera, Video Recorder, MP3 player!
Weaknesses: Camera not good in Low Light situations. No WiFi
Overall: I really can't complain. I didn't want to be lugging a laptop nor did I need everything on a laptop to assist me on simple day to day activities. I work in the Entertainment Industry and this PDA delivers everything I needed. I could record notes on the go, take pics of scenes, reminders ring me to notify of upcoming events I programmed earlier in the week, and if I needed to write a few pages of a script I could (especially with my foldable keyboard I bought later). I can even listen to my favorite MP3's while I work or read an eBook inbetween shoots! It's easy to sync up to your Desktop PC. I didn't want to buy a PDA phone. I was worried that if the phone or pda would break I'd be out of both things...which would not be good. You can always add components to this PDA. I bought the foldable keyboard ($53.00) and an FM transmitter ($19.99)so I could listen to my Mp3's on my car stereo (you can transmit anywhere there is an FM radio). YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE OF THIS PDA!
