Netgear wireless kit with WGT624 router

Netgear WGT624 router

Netgear WG111 USB adapter
The Netgear kit hits the sweet spot in performance and price, making it our Best Buy. We liked the kit's sleek silver casing and excellent browser-based setup utility, as well as the included cheat sheet of connection settings used by many major ISPs. Detailed context-sensitive help and thorough explanations run alongside the browser setup utility. And the Netgear is no slouch: Running in the Super G mode in our tests, it achieved a very respectable average throughput of 195 mbps--not the fastest on the chart, but easily enough for general use. The router also offers one of the most complete sets of routing and security tools that we saw, such as e-mail intrusion alerts, WDS support, and an SPI firewall. It's also moderately priced: At $205, the kit is only $35 more expensive than the cheapest we tested. The only minor wrinkle is that the WG111 USB 2.0 adapter does not support WPA encryption or the Super G enhanced mode; Netgear does offer a PC Card (the WG511T) that supports both.
Upshot: The Netgear is near the top in virtually every category: performance, features, setup, support, and even looks. It's a great package for putting your systems onto a wireless network.

Duration of ownership: 4 Months
Strengths: Very good and reliable, easy to use and set up, fun to play around with.
Weaknesses: Set up
Overall: At first i kept on getting drop outs but calling customer service and my retailer working together we were able to work out the problem. We had to readjust the MTU size. Anywhere around about 1300 to about 1600 is ok.

Weaknesses: need to know
Overall: I am looking forward to buy this router. But before buying I want to confirm 1 thing. Does it allows VPN passthrough? If it does, do we need to configure specific settings or will it work with default settings.

Weaknesses: Dropping off connections
Overall: It worked fairly well for about 6 months. It starts to drop off connections recently. I have one computer connected through network cable, three computer connected using wireless. The router starts to drop off connections to one or two computers randomly, reboot the router will re-connect, some time you have to reboot the computer too. The problem gets worse and worse, it will drop every 20 minutes or so now, basically not usable. I have a spare brand new DI-524 from D-link, trying to replace this one but it has the same problem even it is a brand new!

Weaknesses: Quality
Overall: This is the second netgear router I've had...the first lasted 1 year and 1 week...just beyond warranty. Purchased another (current router) and this one lasted 10 months and is now considered defective. Network kept going down to the point I had to continually reconfigure the router. Network would only stay up for a max of 3 days and sometimes went down 3 or 4 times a day. Paid for a service call (netgear only provides free support for 90 days) and have been working with support on resolving the problem for a month now. They have finally said it is defect and they will provide a replacement, and this is like rubbing your face in it, but they will not ship the new router until they receive the old. If however I want to pay extra (about $20) they will ship before they receive the defective router. I have logged a comment under the trouble ticket that this is unacceptable.
