Canon MultiPass MP390
MP390 DESKTOP PHOTO PRINTER COPIER/ FAX/ SCANNER (Canon-9017A002) Review, by Lisa Cekan August 26, 2004
The Canon MultiPass MP390 has a great mix of speed, quality, and features, and can handle both home-oriented and light office tasks well. Home users will appreciate the flatbed scanner, the media card slots, and the USB 2.0 port that communicates with PictBridge-compatible digital cameras. Small offices might find the built-in fax capability more attractive; only one other inkjet MFP in the group we tested came with this feature, and only the MP390 faxes in color.
The MP390's front panel includes buttons for copying, scanning, faxing, and printing photos from a media card. You also get a number pad for entering fax numbers, and a raised LCD panel paired with buttons for navigating menus. A nice touch: You can set the machine to Quiet Printing, which muffles the sound slightly.
At 5.3 ppm, text printed at average speeds; graphics were average, too, at 0.9 ppm. The MP390 had the fastest copy speeds--3.6 ppm--of any of the inkjet MFPs, and it was slightly faster than the average at scanning a 4-by-5-inch photo at 100 dpi, taking 28 seconds. You don't have to give up quality for such speed, either. Text looked dark and clean, and graphics showed good contrast and realistic skin tones. On our line art document, the MP390 was the only inkjet MFP we tested this month to earn a score of Good; though the line art's narrow parallel lines looked a tad fuzzy, they remained well separated and even. Photographs printed on glossy paper at best settings showed vivid colors and realistic textures. The MP390 made sharper copies of a text document than any other inkjet MFP we tested, earning a Very Good score more on a par with laser MFPs. Copies of color graphics, which we didn't formally score, looked too dark but improved when we selected a lighter copy setting.
Like other inkjet MFPs in our test, the MP390 incorporates some user-friendly features into its driver. For instance, the driver prompts you to choose a task, such as printing a photo, chart, text, or graphics, and automatically sets the print quality based on the task. Canon bundles its own image editing program with the MP390, as well as the Omniport optical character recognition application and the ArcSoft Photo Studio image editing program.
Upshot: The Canon MP390 is a great addition to a home or small office, especially if you need to print high-quality photos and send a few faxes.

Strengths: Great Print Quality.
Weaknesses: None noted.
Overall: This all in one printer is awesome. I purchased it from Staples for approximately $35 after rebate and price matches. The print quality is great. The ink cartridges are inexpensive. The only downside is lack of an auto document feeder for scanning and faxing.

Strengths: easy to use, simple interface, easy to setup, nice quality, decent price
Weaknesses: sometimes a little slow, can go through ink fast if you print or copy a lot
Overall: Overall this is a nice all-in-one. I did not experience any problems or issues.I set it up without any trouble, used a USB cable I had lying around. Prints fast enough for me. Have not faxed yet but it seems pretty straightforward. I like being able to make copies easily and instantly. Although you can waste a lot of ink if you copy small items (receipts, UPCs, etc.) because the rest of the paper prints up all black (lots of black ink goes to waste). Maybe there is a way to avoid this, perhaps putting something else on the device such as a piece of paper.Scanning is just as simple without any problems. I think newer models are faster, but this is fine for me for now.Even though you might use a lot of ink if you print a lot, there are stores that sell generic ink and its cheap and works fine.

Strengths: Beautiful nice looking machine perfect for home or very small business.
Weaknesses: a little bulky, small ink refills, but the looks and Canon name make up the difference.
Overall: I've only owned it a couple days but does print really nice pictures and copies.I probably will never use the Fax but will use the Scanner/Copier which is very nice. All in all I am pretty satisified since this unit will do what I want it to do.I could of spent more for bigger options; but I thought I'd never use it anyways.

Strengths: Fast Printing, Decent Image quality on the scanner. Cheap Ink, built in media reader
Weaknesses: No separate ink tanks, big, media reader slow, ink cartridges are small.
Overall: I bought this due to my old scanner refusing to work with Windows XP. I have to say that it is a very nice multifunction printer with excellent print quality. However my main gripe about it is its huge size (though there isn't much you can really do to get around this) and its very slow media reader. I'm getting about 150-300 KB a second on the reader with slow access times for my Lexar 1 GB 32x SD card. Imagine transfering a 800 MB file @ 150 KB a second.....not very fun. But its better than nothing (as I hear other multi-function printers with built in media readers do not recognize itself as a usb mass storage device in windows) Everything else is very nice though, I would definitely buy it again and get a separate media reader instead.
