Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra
Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60GB MP3 Player (Creative Labs-70PD055000001) Review, by Eric Dahl February 24, 2004
Creative's $400, 60GB Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra--the flagship model in the company's line of hard-drive-based MP3 players--may look a bit like an old-school Sony Walkman, but at a cost of just under $7 per gigabyte, it's one of the best values among portable MP3 players. By way of comparison, Apple's 20GB IPod goes for the same price but offers one-third the storage.
The Zen Xtra's best asset is a powerful interface for building playlists on the device. As you browse through the Xtra's music library, you can add any artist, album, individual track, or playlist to a queue called Selected Music. Once you've added tunes to Selected Music, you can scroll to any track in that list and play it, move it around, or remove it from the queue. Selected Music also recognizes albums, artists, and playlists. Albums, for example, show up in the list as albums, not just a list of tracks. That way, if you've added 15 albums to Selected Music, you can collapse the list to show just the album titles (thereby saving scrolling time) or expand it so you can find specific tracks easily.
The Zen sounds great as well--once you ditch the chintzy earbud headphones included with the package. Creative's EAX audio processing lets you apply a number of effects to your music, including custom and preset equalizer settings.
Creative made a couple changes to the side-mounted controls found on the original Nomad Zen. On the positive side, it added a helpful back button; unfortunately, Creative also replaced the original Zen's scroll wheel with a jog dial that's a lot harder to use. Pushing the jog dial in to select something is particularly unreliable, to the point where you almost always need to consult the Xtra's bright, seven-line LCD display to figure out what you're doing.
Though the included carrying case leaves the side-mounted controls accessible, it covers the LCD display. That would be fine if the jog dial control were easier to use. To see what you're doing as you scroll through tracks on a playlist, you have to flip the case open as if you were flashing an FBI badge. A clear, plastic window on the case would have been a nice addition.
Upshot: If you don't mind its above-average size, the Zen Xtra offers an outstanding playlist interface and almost three times the capacity of other MP3 players in the same price range.

Strengths: This mp3 player was serving me great until a few days ago i got a no license to play flag on my mp3. I tried to get in touch with Creative, but with no use by phone or by their web site. their support for a product that is a few years old is non-existant. Now I have a mp3 player that I can play the songs I already have but can't put anymore songs on it. Creative should of told me the use of their product is limited to 2 years...Larry

Strengths: Massive storage space. Cord or USB chargeable, removeable battery.
Weaknesses: Size and weight. No stop button.
Overall: The Jukebox is a striaght up MP3 player with no other frills. Right out of the box it is intuitive to set up and easy to use. The only negative is it's size. The Jukebox is amongst the largest of all players out there and you can forget about using it in the gym or running with it if you plan to clip it to your body. It's just too cumbersome. But that aside, the player is great for storing mass amounts of data - music or otherwise, and is ideal for travel, the office, or even hooking it up to your home (or a friend's)stereo system via an adapter cable. Considering storage space to price - it can't be beat. I have found that purchasing a second, smaller player such as the Creative Zen Micro, the two players together are still cheaper than the iPod, and have WAY more features. The Zen Micro has an FM tuner, line in recording (great), is tiny and still holds up to 1GB. But that's another review.

Strengths: huge space (60gb), quality sound, can play music by genre/artist/album, all at a price you can't beat.
Weaknesses: slightly heavy and big, controls take a while of getting use to, potential problems (see below).
Overall: so far, no problems such as bad headphon jack, harddrive failure, or the front cover popping off, as other users have mentioned. even if the player does break down somehow after the warranty period, there are sites that give you step by step instructions on how to fix/enhance your player. so i'm not too worried =)

Strengths: Easy to organize and find music. The storage capacity is great. The software is very flexible and fairly easy to use.
Weaknesses: No radio receiver. Touch screen would be a nice addition.
Overall: It is very easy to organize and find music. The storage capacity is more than enough....so far. The Creative software is also very flexible and easy to use for the most part. Only a couple of very small complaints....and it may just be that I am not be familiar enough with it yet, but the unit appears to lack a stop button. Of course, you can pause or power down the unit, but a stop button just makes sense. The other complaint is that it would be nice if the software had a single button sync feature, but I again I may just need to explore it more. The Ripping feature of the software is great. It is easy to pull the CD information right off the internet, and the software allows you to setup how the songs will be name and where they will be saved very easily. The software allows quick and easy conversion from WAV to MP3 or other formats. I am very impressed so far. I can't wait to throw all my CDs in a closet.

Strengths: Storage, software, sound quality
Weaknesses: buttons take some getting used to
Overall: First off, size is not an issue with this thing. I read all the reviews saying it's "huge". Not the case. Maybe compared to other players, but it's roughly the size of a wallet. Personally, i wouldn't want anything smaller. It just feels like a well built, well designed player. Sound quality is amazing, eax features and kinda odd and not really of any practical use (and drain the battery), battery life is decent, about 10 hours, software is perfect. Nomad explorer loads quickly, and it's drag and drop from there. Open it and your music folder, transfer at lightning speed (about 5-10 seconds/disc encoded at 192kbs. All in all, i couldn't have asked for a better DAP. Only downside is sometimes the buttons need to be held for half a second to be recognized. Not a big deal, but was expecting instant response. I guess you can't have everything. Highly Recommended

Strengths: Large capacity, great price, very good sound
Weaknesses: So-so earbuds, menu system possibly confusing, clunky management software
Overall: I had a 30GB model Nomad Zen Xtra before, so I'm familiar with the model although I've had this one just a few days (gave the older one to our daughter). I like classical music, so the ability to hold numerous long, uninterrupted works is important to me, and you get large capacity on the Nomad for a lot less than its Ipod equivalent. The sound is very good even when played through my large system. It works reliably, though my daughter reports it's not a good idea to drop it more than once or twice (but even then it works after you press the reset button). Thank goodness for the almost-like-leather protective travel pouch that's included! On the downside the earbuds are mediocre (I'm about to spring for some Sennheisers), the menu system can be a bit confusing, and fat-fingered folk are likely to hit the wrong button if not careful, or overshoot with the scroller. The management software is pretty awkward and unintuitive; I recommend Notmad instead. But to me these are minor considerations compared with the Zen Xtra's advantages.
