Beneath the HP Compaq Business Notebook Nc6000's mild-mannered exterior lies a 5.8-pound powerhouse. Its stupendous battery life of 6 hours and 23 minutes is one of the longest we've seen. And it's no slouch: Equipped with a 1.6-GHz Pentium M processor and 512MB of RAM, the Nc6000 earned an impressive PC WorldBench 4 score of 125.

HP Compaq Business Notebook Nc6000
NC6000 Review, by Carla Thornton March 29, 2004
The Nc6000 offers just about everything a corporate notebook user could want, including a combination DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive, dual pointing devices, and options for both internal Bluetooth and 802.11a/g wireless interfaces (our review model came with just 802.11a/g). There's also a gigabit ethernet port for speedy connections to a corporate network. And HP tucks an SD slot under the Nc6000's dual PC Card slots.
The keyboard feels a bit springy, but it has a touch-type-friendly layout. The touchpad and the eraserhead have separate sets of mouse buttons, which we found slightly stiff but usable. Above the keyboard sit three shortcut buttons, including one that toggles Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and off, and another that launches a presentation program with your preferred power and display settings. A third shortcut button puts the notebook in a "quick lock" mode that disables the keyboard and clears the display, a handy feature for when you have to step away from your work briefly. For extra security, HP offers a $50 SmartCard reader (filling one of the PC Card slots) that uses a password-protected SmartCard to prevent unauthorized access. For $75, you can order HP's ProtectTools Security module, a built-in chip that lets you set up the notebook to automatically encrypt certain files and folders.
The documentation we received was less comprehensive than that accompanying other HP Compaq notebooks. It consisted of a single printed booklet. Nevertheless, it does a fair job of identifying parts and describing features. (HP says that it bundles an electronic manual too, but we didn't receive one.) HP offers a number of expansion options for the Nc6000. Power gluttons can beef up battery life by swapping out the removable combo drive for a $170 secondary battery or gain more storage with a $600, 60GB secondary hard drive. The two slots for RAM modules are located under the keyboard in a cramped compartment we could barely squeeze our fingers into. On our test unit, one was filled with a 512MB module. But storage upgrades should be easy: Just remove a couple of screws on the bottom to tug the hard drive out of the left side of the notebook. HP sells two port replicators for this notebook--a $179 basic model and a $279 unit that includes two built-in modular bays. Both use a connector on the bottom of the notebook.
Upshot: The all-around excellent Nc6000 will please business users with its combination of speed, long battery life, and style.

Duration of ownership: 3 Years
Strengths: No Strengths Not much good whent the thing will not even start up
Weaknesses: Develops a fault where by it becomes very unstable and has trouble starting.
Overall: This notebook is an absolute lemon do not buy one. Mike was fine until it developed a fault. It has troble starting up. When the power button is pressed it will run the fan and the power and bluetooth leds will come on for 10 seconds then it will turn off. When the laptop is moved or the screen is moved the screen will go blank and it locks up. After looking on the internet I find this is a very common fault. I am taking the issue up with HP as I feel it is a manufacturing fault. So far they have not admitted that there is a problem with this notebook. A quick search on the internet would suggest otherwise. DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP.

Strengths: None
Weaknesses: HP customer service
Overall: I just bought two nc6000 and one showed problems with the screen as soon as a week after purchasing. For nine days was under repair but the machine was returned as hp service could not find the problem with the screen as it is random. Contacting HP service is difficult if not impossible out of office hours for those of us not willing to waste hours trying to get support at our jobs. It is not just hp quality is no longer the same it is service also the issue. Guess I will end up with a new machine refurbished out of factory after just two weeks of use.

Strengths: Well built system, great battery life, on board graphics (not shared video ram). Does not get as hot as most.
Weaknesses: Slightly heavier than other thin&lights. No firewire.
Overall: Why does PC WORLD allow a reveiwer to post such a negative when that person states he has owned the machine for 2 years, when it's only been out 6 mos.

Strengths: Tough case, wireless, batery life
Weaknesses: washed out colors on screen, reliability, weight, build quality
Overall: Horrible computer. I have to have one because our school includes it in a tech package. It worked great for the first few months, then the problems began:-Needed replacement battery-"Blue screen of death" 3-4 times per week- Keyboard actually damaged the screen- Battery falls out- Frequent lockups- Fan stops working and computer overheatsAfter about a year of owning this computer I bought a Powerbook because I was so sick of dealing with it. After getting the powerbook I noticed how washed out the colors are on the HP/Compaq screens. The powerbook is much more reliable. I haven't had to restart once in 1 year. I just received the new version of this laptop 3 weeks ago and am already having video card problems. I can also say mine was not an isolated incident, as all 5000 students here have the same laptop and everyone I know has had problems. My girlfriend also had a compaq, though a different model, that was even more problematic. Bottom Line: If i wasn't forced to have this computer, it would have been gone a year and a half ago. Absolutely horrible after the first few weeks of ownership.

Strengths: long battery life, decent speed and design, better price than other brands' similar spec.
Weaknesses: Its maximum resolution is only at 1024 x 768 but it supports 1600 x 1200 with an external monitor.
Overall: Compare to other brands at a similar price range, HP NC6000 comes with better parts such DVD/CDRW combo drive, 512MB RAM, and 60GB HDD. It runs about 6 hours with included battery fully charged which is very satisfactory. The design is decent and it includes ATi MOBILITY RADEON 9600 which gives me a good gaming speed. The only weakness is the resoultion: 1024 x 768 even though it supports 1600 x 1200 resolution with external monitors.
