Canon ZR90
ZR90 MiniDV Digital Camcorder Review, by Bryan Hastings April 30, 2004
The ZR90 is a higher-end model than the ZR80. It shares the same external design, menus, and control layouts, but adds extra features such as a powerful 22X zoom lens, an improved low-light shooting mode, and the ability to save both still images (up to a maximum resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels) and video clips to an SD card. It can also save a 640-by-480-resolution still shot to the memory card while simultaneously recording video to tape--useful if you want to quickly e-mail someone images from your vacation, as the camera also has a USB port for quickly downloading images to a PC from the SD card. A white LED video-assist light mounted on the front of the camera improves image sharpness and colors in low-light shooting--but it's effective for a range of only a few feet. The slow shutter-speed mode produced video that was fuzzy and lacked color.
Canon also bundles a wide-angle lens that screws onto the ZR90's main lens. The attachment worked well, providing a wide angle of view that would be useful for shooting subjects at close quarters. But the accessory lens is a little awkward to attach and easy to drop, so try not to put it on while walking.
Presumably due to the extra features drawing more power, the included 800mAh battery lasted 1 hour and 24 minutes in our tests, 6 minutes less than the Z80. While this is still enough for a day's shooting, you'd need to invest in a higher-capacity battery for a longer trip.
But the Z90 has the same problems as the Z80: Some of the buttons are in awkward locations and contain lots of functions on each of them, making it difficult to find features like the volume control or the shooting modes. The menu system also takes some time to figure out.
Upshot: The ZR90 boasts some useful features, but the controls are awkward and take some time to learn.

Strengths: Great video & still shots.
Weaknesses: Controls are a little misleading and a little difficult for my large fingers.
Overall: After looking at several different camcorders from various manufactures, I settled for the Canon ZR-90. I'm so glad I did. After reading all I could about a lot of different makes and listening to a lot of sales reps(most of which knew very little and seemed to want to steer you to the higher priced models) this one was for us. The wife just loves it for all those special grand baby moments.Buttons are a little small for my large paws, but for the quality and value for the money spent I rate it 10 out of 10.

Strengths: Straight forward controls, seem well placed. Instructions, optical zoom are good. In limited light seems to give good pictures, haven't tried total darkness, color comes from light. Fits in belt Pac.
Weaknesses: Would like a little more discussion as to the purpose or use of some functions. Would like to see a rotating view finder like my Nikon, makes for easier angles for pic taking.
Overall: I have yet to work with all the functions, but those I have work well. Butterfly, Jason, got the camera out quickly. The wrong 1394 cable was sent. A phone call got the new one out while I was sending the incorrect one back. Appreciate the trust. With the many features I look forward to much editing and enhancing of movies. I like to dress up my movies to make them more interesting. I think this Canon ZR 90 digital camcorder will keep me busy for many years to come.

Strengths: Light, small and relatively easy to use. Good zoom range. Video quality and still images are acceptable. Overall, good camcorder/camera for the price.
Weaknesses: Grainy night shots; supplied battery does not last long.
Overall: I've already read reviews on this camcorder before deciding to make the purchase so I knew what and what not to expect from this particular model. Under good lighting conditions - it delivers. The optional video light and an extended life battery are essential additions.

Strengths: very cute and sexy!... light easy to carry.
Weaknesses: short battery life
Overall: After more than a month of searching I finaly decided about buying this camcorder (canon zr90). I read good review about this product and I compare it to other brand between the price and the functions. It looks like a very good package. Great deal and a very amazing price. So far base in my study of my new camcorder I enjoyed a lot and hopefuly it's gonna be like this for atleast many more years.
