Toshiba Satellite A45-S250
Satellite A45-S250 Notebook Review, by Carla Thornton April 29, 2004
If you dislike stretching to reach distant keys, you'll love the Toshiba Satellite A45-S250's ski-slope keyboard. Though its pointy rubber feet may discourage users from putting it on their laps, the resulting wedge shape makes it a delight to use on a desk. And the farther away the desk is, the better you'll appreciate the A45-S250's almost 7 hours of battery life, a record in our tests. The A45-S250 is a bit hefty, at 7.7 pounds (sans power adapter) and a case height of 2.4 inches.
The tritone unit--black and metallic gray with a blue lid--has a fixed DVD burner on the right and four USB ports. The 15-inch screen has a relatively low resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels, and the only card reader on board is an SD slot stacked atop a PC Card reader. On the other hand, the A45-S250 offers good sound from its keyboard-mounted stereo speakers and a dedicated set of audio buttons, including a volume wheel located within easy reach on the side. Toshiba nicely documents the A45-S250's features in print and electronic form. The printed manual covers basic features and troubleshooting; the Acrobat reference on the hard drive expands on that information and has a handy hyperlinked index.
The A45-S250 slips a bit in performance. Using a 2.8-GHz mobile Pentium 4 processor, it earned a PC WorldBench 4 score of 111, about 10 percent below the 123 earned by a Sharp Actius RD10 equipped with a 2.8-GHz Pentium 4 desktop chip.
Upshot: A portable desktop replacement with a DVD burner, the Toshiba Satellite A45-S250 deserves attention for its ergonomic keyboard and outstanding battery life.

Strengths: Easy to use even for a computer dummy like me. From registering as a new user to adding and deleting new software; this notebook has replaced my desktop computer 99.89% of the time.
Weaknesses: A little heavy when carrying for 5 city blocks or 10 minutes, whichever comes first.
Overall: This is my third 'laptop' computer - the first being an Apple; the second being a Compaq. This Toshiba is no comparison: not only for now applications but for all around usage. BTW, I never use this notebook as a laptop as my chubby thighs need a break. But this notebook goes everywhere I go, from the internet cafe-laundry combo (that has free WI-FI for its customers) to the public library (also has free WI-FI), to my bed side so I can watch DVDs or listen to tunes. I have used this notebook as a replacement to my 3 year old Compac 7360 desktop.I use this notebook for business as well as pleasure; and this notebook came with all of the features I wanted. I would highly recommend this or any other TOSHIBA Satellite for anyone wanting a complete system right out of the box.

Strengths: SD Card Slot, Wireless Network Antenna and (4) USB Ports.
Weaknesses: Display, Speed of Processor and Battery Life!
Overall: This Toshiba A45-S250 Laptop Computer is Ok general computer work as long as you have it pluged into the wall using the Adapter. Type a letter, use e-mail, Internet, etc. However, I thought the Intel Pentium 2.8GHz Processor would run a lot faster than it does! Battery life on this computer is very low, about an hour if your lucky! The 15" Display is adequate for general computer work however, it could be much better than it is. The SD Card Slot is great for backing up files and the Wireless Network Antenna is great also, if you use it, which I don't. The SD Card Slot, (4) USB Ports and the Wireless Network Antenna with its own On & Off Switch is about the best features on this computer among all else. My next Laptop purchase however, will have a Pentium "M" which is much faster than the Pentium 4 and a better resolution Display however, it will indeed cost me more money.

Strengths: reliable, good util. good sound system.
Weaknesses: not vivid monitor, too heavy, noisy.
Overall: this computer has reliable, stable system, but the monitor is not good enough ( bright but not clear). It's too heavy and noisy. The good sound system is useless.
