Canon i80 Color Bubble Jet Printer
i80 Bubble Jet Printer Review, by Dan Littman June 25, 2004
Canon's diminutive i80 is the smallest mobile printer PC World has seen in quite a while, and the least expensive--until you add a rechargeable battery or Bluetooth adapter. We got a kick out of using the i80 and marveled at its compact design: The upper half of the shell flips open to become a 30-sheet paper tray. The configuration we tested weighed 4 pounds, plus 10 ounces for the AC adapter. Its dimensions--2 inches thick and about 12 inches wide by 7 inches deep--make it easy to tote.
To take full advantage of the i80's mobility, you'll have to buy the $100 battery and charging kit. This assembly snaps onto the back of the printer, adding a little girth and 1.5 more pounds. Another charging option is a cradle--a desktop base that the printer fits into with the battery attached. Together with the portable kit, the cradle costs $140. People who spend a lot of time in their automobiles might want to spring for a car charger ($90 extra). When fully charged, the battery should last for 450 pages, according to Canon. An optional Bluetooth card, which tucks under the output slot, costs $80.
The i80's ink costs are higher than those of most desktop models: In lab testing conducted for PC World by the Rochester Institute of Technology, a page of black ink costs 5.3 cents, and a page of color plus black costs 13.4 cents. (Costs per page from HP's portable DeskJet 450wbt were similar: 5.1 cents for black and 13.6 cents for color plus black.) The i80's cartridges are small to match the printer (though they come two to a pack). The black cartridge lasted for 113 pages, and the color cartridge for 136.
Despite its small size, the i80 printed text at a creditable 5.7 pages per minute, (better than the 4.9 ppm average of recently tested all-purpose inkjets). Its text looked strongly black, though we noticed a bit of splatter at large type sizes. On plain paper the i80 printed color graphics at a below-average 1 ppm, but it was more impressive when printing glossy photos: It took about 3.5 minutes to print PC World's test photo, whereas recently tested general-purpose inkjets averaged almost 4 minutes. The i80's photo quality was only slightly below that of dedicated photo printers; color photos had a slightly reddish cast but accurate texture and good detail.
Upshot: The i80 makes a good traveling companion, but we think Canon should have included the battery in the package.

Strengths: Great printing speed and high quality output
Weaknesses: Printer lasted only 2 years without excessive or daily use
Overall: I am shocked the given the Canon reputation that this printer, only used with my laptap on home, developed mechanical problems after 2 years of very light use. Never bashed about in my travel case! Seriously wondering how it would have held up under intense, on the road work conditions. When enquiries made about having the paperfeeder mechanics fixed....the cost of repair was almost same as new printer replacement costs!Maybe Canon should offer trade-in rebates toward replacement printers!

Strengths: Light weight, highly portable, slick design, multi-connection options
Weaknesses: Limited ink and paper size selections
Overall: The I-80 was bought specifically for use during my business trips. With a capability of printing up to 14 ppm in black and up to 10 ppm in color and a resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi, it serves more than a portable officejet is needed for. I tried different media including small invitation cards, flyers and simple graphics, all match up the quality printed out from my OKI C5150n. The only thing that makes the I-80 not flawless is the limited ink catridge and print size selections which most trip-goers would think less important.

Strengths: Compact design, Easy set-up, Great color output for a portable printer.
Weaknesses: Bluetooth adapter($80) and Battery Kit($100) sold separately.
Overall: I travel alot with my laptop and needed to get a portable printer. I looked at the HP 450, the Canon i80 and the Canon ip90. The HP 450 has a version that comes with a built-in battery and Bluetooth for under $400. The Canon printers did not include the bluetooth and battery but were only 2" high versus the 3" HP. With limited room in my brief case, I decided to buy the Canon i80. The i80 is sweet. It spit Yahoo maps and pdfs like they were nothing. Quark and Photoshop files obviously took longer but the color was surprisingly good. Prints on photo paper are as good as any inkjet I have seen. I finally decided to take the i80 back and order the ip90 which is a little faster, has some ink saving modes and matches the color scheme of my powerbook(silver and black) but I was otherwise very happy with the i80. Canon also does something interesting: The ink cartridges are very affordable since they come in packs of two.

Strengths: Very compact for traveling purposes. Print quality is excellent
Weaknesses: Cartridges are on the expensive side
Overall: The Printer handles photo, standard, lables, etc. It is quite light weight. Therefore, making it very convenient to travel with. The print quality is one of the best. The only drawback is the cartridges are on the expensive side.

Strengths: Size, clarity of print, excellent for photos.
Weaknesses: Pricey ink cartridges.
Overall: I purchased this printer for travel and have found it to be exceedingly well suited for inclusion in my laptop case. It is very small of course, which is what attracted me to it, but it is also well-made and does a dandy job of printing both business documants and photos if need be. Setup was a snap and I appreciate flexibility and the wide range of paper/media it can handle. I am going to have to buy a second i80 because my daughter is begging for one for her dorm room.
